This is a world class museum of photography. Both the collection of photographs and technology are amazing. Our docent was really knowledgeable about George Eastman and his contributions to the business of photography. The mansion would be worth a visit by itself!

As a child, growing up in Rochester, NY. this was a frequent visit from my elementary school. And my father’s office was across the street from it on East avenue.
The house was the home of George Eastman ( who created Kodak corporation in Rochester.)
It is a great house, which is now a museum of photography, with a movie theatre attached to the house( which still showed old black and white films from the beginning of motion pictures, when I last went there.
There are numerous pictures by Matthew Brady from the civil war and numerous examples of early cameras throughout the house.
It’s one of my favorite childhood memories. And East avenue was the center of Rochester society for years.
If you are in Rochester. This is a recommended stop!!!

This museum showed us the life of George Eastman. Unfortunately, the movie that you view in the very beginning was closed. It would have been nice to see that. I liked all the information provided near the exhibits. But I’m not necessarily a photography fan so the different cameras/photographic processes throughout the home and in the museum were not really interesting to me. I was interested in the human interest side of his life. A very generous benefactor to the town of Rochester, he put this town on the map. It had snowed so no gardens to view. I would recommend coming here in the spring, summer or fall but not the winter. We decided to stay for lunch and there were nice lunch offerings, mainly soup, sandwiches and salads. Good if you are hungry but you don’t want to search out a restaurant nearby. Not bad for museum food.

There seemed to be much open space; some exhibits we liked alot; others seemed of no real interest to us(we like the photographic hardware; the cameras; anything like that; but lately, it seems to be filled with exhibits of quite avant guard photographers more than the camera stuff... the hallways leading to the house; those were near empty only filled several of the gingerbread houses which are on exhibit all over the place.....I know that the musuem has huge achieves of the Eastman Kodak company; I wish we'd see more of that....of course it was too cold to go out thru the gardens; it actually snowed while we were there; which made a creative number of views/photos...Christmas decorations seemed modest but tactful in the mansion; we were disappointed with changes to exhibits upstairs....
Of note though, is their MARVELOUS cafe/restaurant...Open Face.....opens at 11am daily; moderately priced; open and airy and light....both of our meals were terrific and the staff were very cheery and happy.
oh. the gift shop is interesting blend of items; some photo related;; some science; some ornaments for Christmas...
If this is new to you, I think you will enjoy it; plan on 2 hours at least; children will be bored with much of it; although there is a childrens' activity area on the upstairs of the mansion...If you are into old movies, look for the schedule of films shown in their theater on site;

Beautiful place to visit. The museum is quite interesting and the home itself is beautiful to see. If you like gardens and flowers I would go in the summer because the grounds are amazing. There is an interactive kids room with many hands on activities. Plenty of parking and bathroom stops on a few floors.

We were happy to discover this place to visit while we were in the Finger Lakes area. The Eastman Museum has a wonderful gallery, gift shop and cafe. The home is just amazing with so many artifacts from his life. Cool old cameras to see on display as well. If you are in the area, we definitely recommend stopping here for an afternoon!

We were vacationing in the Finger Lakes with another couple and realized we were only 30 miles from Rochester and the George Eastman Museum. Our friends were professional photographers before retirement and I was also a photography hobbyist, so this looked interesting. And it truly was. The Museum is attached to Eastman’s mansion home, so both the technical side of the development and advancement of chemical photography and the personal and opulent lifestyle of the Kodak founder is presented. Also displayed are the works of several prominent photographic artists.
We spent several hours examining the still and movie camera collections, the backstories of the men and ideas behind these mechanical achievements, and the home and grounds of the Kodak founder who brought photography to the general public.

This was a very interesting museum. The mansion was a really cool thing to see. The history about Mr. Eastman sawing a room to expand it from a square to a rectangle is amazing. The numerous safari trophies were nice to see. And don't give me that people shouldn't do big game trophy hunting. That was another time and situations, so if it happened, I at least get to see it, it shouldn't happen now but that was then. The history on all the musical instruments that he could not play was very interesting. After you leave the mansion and head to the back you come across so many great examples of cameras through the ages. Beautiful and fun place to visit. Highly recommend it to photographers and photography buffs. And like a nightmare, I left my camera back and home and had to use a phone for the pictures.

George Eastman (1854-1932) was known for many things: He established the Eastman School of Music, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, schools of dentistry and medicine at the University of Rochester and in London the Eastman Dental Hospital. He donated money for the construction of buildings for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Tuskegee University and Hampton University, as well as donating money for clinics in London. However, he is best known for his 1888 development of the Kodak camera, which he had to create so that the first roll of film he patented in 1884 could be used. The two were sold together and allowed for 100 exposures. He also developed bromide paper for the film industry.
The George Eastman Museum fronts his mansion on East Avenue in Rochester. In 1949, after his death, his home was used for the International Museum of Photography and Film, then when it became a National Historic Landmark, reopened as the George Eastman Museum.
The Eastman house was built from 1902 to 1905 in the Colonial Revival style. One enters into a conservatory and is thrown back to a time of opulence. Further, is the Dining Room, Conservatory, Billiard Room, Library, and Great Hall. One may even see a figure sitting on a couch who looks very much like the man, but it is a large placard of him. Up the grand staircase, one can find the restored bedroom of his mother, Maria, who he was devoted to.
The house had many innovative modern conveniences: an electrical generator, a telephone system with twenty-one stations, a built-in vacuum cleaning system, a central clock network, an elevator, and a pipe organ. The property also had a working farm, formal gardens, greenhouses, stables, barns, and pastures.
The back garden was in a bit bare in the fall when we visited.
George Eastman never married. He was in awe of his mother and could not do enough for her while she lived, and was overwhelmed by her death. Eastman bequeathed most of his assets to the University of Rochester. The mission of the museum is “to collect, preserve, study, and exhibit photographic and cinematic objects and related technology from the inception of each medium to the present.”
In his later years, he suffered from a disorder that affected his spine and was often in pain. On March 14, 1932, he fatally shot himself, leaving a note that read, “To my friends: my work is done. Why wait?” His legacy is well-presented, and his contributions to the film and photography world are vast. People are curious about why he named his camera, Kodak. Truth is, he made it up, believing it would be hard to forget and not easily mis-pronounced. He made so much money from his inventions, patents, and administration of the company, that he founded his own bank, the Eastman Trust and Savings. It is a wonderful museum and so much to see and admire of the man.

I would like to know if the Eastman home is open year round and if the hours are the same year round? What are the hours? Do you need to make reservations for the home tour?

Strathallan (Doubletree Inn) is closest, and is a very fine boutique style hotel with an excellent restaurant. Another two blocks down East Avenue is the East Avenue Inn 384. It was opened in the 60's as a Treadway Inn, but was totally renovated two years ago to first-rate standards. It also has an excellent restaurant called City Grill at East and Alexander St. which has become an upscale "watering hole" for the 30-50 set. I think someone mentioned the Edward Harris House B&B. I've not been there but know who the owners are and it must be another first-rate place to stay. Finally, you will have a wonderful visit to the George Eastman House. It's amazing.
Hello! Do we need to get a ticket online before visiting? thanks!

Not for the museum, but if you want to go to a lecture/presentation or a movie at the Dryden Theater (which is contained within the museum), you probably should purchase them ahead of time to ensure they are not sold out.
Note: you do NOT need to purchase a museum ticket in order to go to the Dryden. They are separate tickets. :-)
