Santorini (official name: Tyra) is one of the Greek-owned Cycladic islands in the Aegean Sea. The hilly landscape of the island was formed by a major volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC. Fira and Ia, the two main cities of Santorini, are known for their snow-white cube-shaped houses built on the rocks above the underwater caldera. They offer wonderful views of the sea, small islands in the west and beaches with black, red and white pebbles of volcanic origin.
The island of Santorini receives hundreds of thousands of tourists every year and has repeatedly been recognized as one of the most beautiful corners of the world. So what beckons people to this jewel of Greece?
Therefore, as we dear readers remember the Greek sayings, for example: “Γουρο? νι στο σακ?”, meaning “Pig in a bag”, this rule applies not only to surprises when checking into the Hotel, as described above, but also when buying excursions, so we will pay more attention not to describing our experiences, but to some practical tips.
So, the cost of an excursion to the island of Ti?ra (Fera, Fira, Greek. Θ?ρα) aka Santori? n (Santorini, Σαντορ? νη) is in the range of €145 to €175 per person depending on the place of purchase (the hotel guide is more expensive and, accordingly, when buying "on the street" cheaper).
The excursion price must include transfers from the hotel (or pick-up point in the city), ferry travel to and from the island, a guide escort and a short bus journey around the island between the cities of Ia and Fira (the capital of Santorini).
Since the journey takes place by ferry for about 2 hours, feel free to bring a little snack and water. As for the temperature when you travel by ferry, that's how the air conditioning works and it feels great, but the island itself is going to be extremely hot.
TIP: it is mandatory to bring Panama
A rough travel plan is this: in the morning, early enough you leave the hotel and take the bus to the ferry. The bus driver will issue tickets for the journey back with the bus number. Since we paid for this tour, we just got ferry tickets at the port office.
IMPORTANT: you will be issued both a back and forth ticket and one of them will indicate the bus number already on the island of Santorini, which you will need to look for upon arrival.
Ferry seating is available according to purchased tickets by section and seat. And the passenger accommodation is very comfortable - there are televisions, location on leather chairs, air conditioning.
Passengers are loaded naturally through the lower deck, where of course darkness and horror. Firstly, there are holiday cars and it is not very convenient to go to the upper deck and secondly, due to the accumulation of vehicles and working units of the ferry itself, there is stuffy, poor lighting and blows off the internal combustion engines.
But here's where the passengers are already placed on the top level of the ferry everything is normal and civilized. The common room seems to be divided into two large halls and separately there is a VIP area, but they are not even allowed to watch the rich gush champagne.
The common room has small bar counters where you can buy drinks and snacks. Prices bite.
If you want to look at the world around you, not breathing in the ventilated air of the air conditioning, but breathing in a fresh gust of sea breeze, you can step aft of the ferry and watch the departure from the island of Crete and feel the full power of the ferry engines throwing waves away.
In fact, what awaits you next is an unexpected participation in the mass shooting of a documentary about the unloading from the ferry of migrants to America – everyone is lined up on the lower deck among the parked cars, the lighting is low, the ferry locks are closed and the action begins: the huge ferry door slowly descends from above, freeing emotional tourists who, for reasons we do not understand, begin to rush towards the exit, as if they will not be allowed to land.
So, you find your bus number on one of the ferry tickets, you're greeted by a guide, and 20 minutes later you're in the town of Ea. There you'll be given an hour or a little more to move around on your own.
TIP: At once, just one ferry can hold thousands of tourists, plus dozens of cars and who knows what else. But the taxi on the island, we're told, is only 200 grand. Therefore, it is very important to stick to the schedule of your guided bus on the island – the bus will not wait for anyone, and taxis may not be found. The same applies to ferry schedules. Inter-island ferries are scheduled, not just from Crete to Santorini and back. So it's not desirable to miss the ferry either. And the unloading and loading of passengers by ferry is very fast - within 10-15 minutes. Pay attention!
The streets of Ia itself are very narrow – so there is no transport, they are exclusively pedestrian. And it's gonna be really hot. So water and cap are our best friends. As for visiting the most interesting places of necessity - toilets, so they pay (€1-1.5), and for free you will not be allowed in the cafe. There will be cafes and shops interspersed along the right and left. With prices it is very simple – add €5-7-10 to the prices you already know and there are prices for Santorini.
For example, Carbonara paste cost almost twice as much...
By the way, we didn't see anything so special or unusual in the form of souvenirs. However, of course, you have to buy something with the symbols of the island or just to remember the charm on the Pandora bracelet (€25-30).
What is interesting, we just didn't know, is that the donkey is a symbol of the island, for example, in the center of the capital in the city of Fir there is a monument to the donkey. Accordingly, many souvenirs will feature donkeys, don't be surprised.
So, 6,000 years ago, a powerful and unusually advanced Minoan civilization was born here. The island was called Tyre, and its inhabitants were very hardworking: they built beautiful palaces and castles, made ceramic products, and ran a household. Their story later formed the basis of many myths, legends and stories.
But in 1500 BC, a mighty volcano awakened near the island, whose massive eruption, according to many scholars, destroyed the great Minoan civilization. And the great height of the waves caused irreparable damage to the inhabitants of the island of Crete and the famous Knos Palace. Part of the island of Tyre was submerged and the relief became a crescent. In 1204, the island was renamed after Saint Irene, the patron saint of the locals, and has since been proudly named Santorini.
The first thing that stands out is the indescribable beauty of the dazzling white houses, so cramped that it feels like everyone is living on each other's heads. The contrast to white is the bright blue roofs, shutters and domes of churches, of which there are more than three hundred. And, of course, chic views of the Aegean Sea and the mighty volcano.
Santorini is also attracted by its colorful beaches. There are about 15 in total, but the calling cards are three:
Black is the longest beach on the island with fine black volcanic sand and pebbles, many bars and taverns
Red - impressively beautiful beach with red pebbles
White – beach with rather rare white pebbles surrounded by pumice rocks
And here you can get an extra €25 boat trip to the nearest island or to the beach, where you can take a dip in the cool sea and take a picture of yourself against the island, but we didn't understand how this could be made before our ferry left, and we refused.
From the town of Ia, the same bus with the guide takes you to the town of Fir – all within 15-20 minutes, during which the guide acquaints you with the history of the island and interesting details, such as a dispute between two villages, which of them is more religious, resulting in about 50 churches being built in one village.
And then the same guided bus back to the port and the ferry to Crete.
What to bring from Santorini:
- local wine
- Australian opal jewelry
- handmade wood and leather products
- a piece of pumice from the volcano
- T-shirt, cap or towel with island symbols
- black volcanic soap
- million photos for Instagram
We had a ferry return around 6:00 p.m., so we were completely free for the rest of the day and still had time to take the Sea by the Hotel and of course in the evening to the Tavern.

Once you arrive at the Three Bells Monastery there will be signage to guide you to the lookout view. It is good for a quick photo and could be an even better spot for a sunset.
We went to this spot during a long walk and spent about 15 minutes here taking pictures.

Three Bells of Fira iconic viewpoint is an iconic viewpoint offering a wonderful view of both the roof of the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a blue dome and a characteristic bell tower with three bells, and the Santorini caldera with the islands lying on it. The viewpoint is high on the cliff above the church. You can reach it by bus, car or on foot. If we go by bus, we get off at the stop in Firostefani, on the main square of the village. From the square we go south towards Fira, passing Villa Fontini along the way, and then turn right, passing the Santorini Palace hotel, reaching the square with a viewing point. We can get to the point itself by car because there is a small parking lot here. We can get there on foot, e.g. from the church of the Assumption by climbing the stairs.
