The U.S. Custom House, or the Old Custom House, looks so out of place in downtown Cairo, Illinois, a three-story Italianate style building with a bracketed cornice and rounded windows in a river town that long since has lost the grandeur that it endured in the 1800s. Built from 1869 to 1872, this historic government building is one of the few surviving U.S. custom houses and one of the largest federal buildings of its era in the Mid-Mississippi Valley region. Originally, the stone structure served as a custom house, post office and courthouse. When Cairo built a new post office in 1942, the building was converted into a police station. Today, it serves as a history museum. Located at 1400 Washington Avenue, the building was selected as one of the Illinois 200 Great Places by the American Institute of Architects Illinois in celebration of the 2018 Illinois Bicentennial. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The museum traces Cairo's history to Lewis & Clark's expedition and the Civil War. Exhibits include a desk used by Ulysses S. Grant when he visited the city, a replica of the U.S.S. Cairo ironclad that is preserved in Vicksburg, Mississippi, a history of the custom house and a limestone marker commemorating the life and legacy of York, William Clark's slave who accompanied the Corps of Discovery and became a central figure in its history.

Cairo was once an important town located at the confluence of two of America's greatest rivers. Now, it is one of the most depressed places you are likely to see anywhere in the Midwest. However, thanks to the efforts of a handful of dedicated volunteers, the Customs House of the 19th century still operates as a local history musuem. The building itself is worth seeing and in the huge hodge-podge of artifacts and photographs on display visitors can grasp Cairo's rich history. They charge $2 per person but give them $10. They need it because if this place dies, there will be nothing left of sad Cairo.

Wow! History and memorabilia galore. Donations of artifacts from local residents. Very friendly volunteer took us all about the building. I wish we had more time to spend here.

Wonderful visit to a unique town. Such history to explore. Lunch in town at Shemwells was full of locals and the bbq was unique. Spend lots of time at the US Customs House. Amazing history and the guide gave us a glimpse of the entire building. The library is another gem. Hike down from Fort Defiance to the shore where the Ohio meets the Mississippi and think about what all has happened at this location. Enjoy Cairo.

This place is amazing and very interesting. I love history and this place is full of local history. If you have children, I doubt they have ever seen some of the items that they will see here.

Located at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers at the southernmost point of Illinois, Cairo once was a bustling antebellum city that boasted many opulent mansions and served as a base of operations for U.S. Grant's drive into Kentucky and Tennessee in the early days of the Civil War. Today, there are few remnants of that glorious era. One is the Old Custom House at Washington and 15th, which was built from 1869 to 1872 to house the offices which dealt with collecting tariffs and duties on international imports which had not been offloaded before they reached Cairo on their way up the Mississippi River to St. Louis. The custom house, now a museum, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is a marvelous structure designed in the Italianate style, a rarity among federal buildings. It features a barrel-vaulted brick ceiling, a bracketed cornice and rounded windows. Fine Italian marble was used for the fireplaces. The floors were made of black slate and white marble square tiles arranged like a checkerboard. Alternating strips of black and white walnut wood were also used for flooring. The museum offers such displays as Civil War memorabilia, a replica of the USS Cairo gunboat that has been restored at the Vicksburg National Park, an 1865 hand-operated pumper and an exhibit on the 1937 flood in Cairo. Also history of the Custom House and the Civil War-era desk used by U.S. Grant when he was on duty in Cairo.

attic. The building itself is an amazing treasure and would be worth a visit on its own--check out the barrel-vaulted brick ceiling, the detailwork on the columns, &c, the flooring, and the marble work on the fireplaces--but the things in this museum are about as eclectic as one could possibly imagine fr/ the ridiculous to the serious to the collectible to the absurd to the amazingly historic.
Pieces salvaged fr/ the ironclad Cairo & other WBts memorabilia, old fire equipment, pharmaceutical supplies fr/ years past, fashions, military memorabilia, things taken fr/ a country store, info on Lewis & Clark (& Seman!), baseball cards, &c fr/ local teams, and a general mish-mash of "stuff". Ask to see the courthouse on the upper floor, ride in the ancient elevator, & view the murals of the city painted on the walls. Our docent, Fred, met us at the door (we arrived at the same time) and led us around the place talking about this, that, & the other for almost two hours. He was an incredible wealth of knowledge and thoroughly enjoyed sharing his "collection" and we enjoyed letting him do so.

Visited Cairo and other towns in the Nile delta region of Illinois while traveling Mississippi River roads. While the town, especially the historic section, is on the verge of depressing due to dilapidation and decay, this museum in the old Customs House stands out as the gem in this historic city.

Try to get a tour from one of the locals but please remember to call in advance as it's not open daily. As a history nerd who read about Cairo frequently in Reconstruction, U.S. Civil War, and other courses, I was thankful to at least see some images and references to the heyday of Cairo in the museum.

Please visit and for sure donate to this fine museum in what should be a thriving river town but will keep politics out of this post.

The Museum has a great amount of Cairo history, and should be on your list of stops. From the large room on the main floor, to the Judge's Chambers on the second floor.

The Cairo Custom House Museum is located at 1400 Washington Avenue in the Historic District of downtown Cairo. The town has suffered bad times, economically and architecturally and racially, but some community-minded and historically-minded people have banded together to restore some of the old homes and historic sites. Of all the historic sites in Cairo, the Old Custom House is the most significant. Built from 1869 to 1872, it served as a customs house, post office and courthouse. Alfred B. Mullett, the U.S. supervising architect at the time, designed the building in the Italianate style, a rarity among federal building. His design features a bracketed cornice and rounded windows. When Cairo built a new post office in 1942, the building became the town's police station. The building is one of the few surviving U.S. customs houses and one of the largest federal buildings of its era in the Mid-Mississippi Valley region. The original purpose of the Custom House was to house the offices which dealt with collecting duties and tariffs on international imports which had not been offloaded before they reached Cairo on their way up the Mississippi River. The customs house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It now serves as a history museum. Interesting displays include Civil War memorabilia, a replica of the U.S.S. Cairo gunboat (the restored ironclad is on display at the Vicksburg National Battlefield Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi, an 1865 hand-operated pumper and an exhibit on the 1937 flood in Cairo. There also is a Civil War-era desk used by General Ulysses S. Grant when he was in Cairo preparing for his invasion of the South.
