Great ghost tour of historic Monterey, CA!
I suggest you take this tour early on your trip, so that you can go back on future days to see all of the sites you visit on the tour!
It is a nighttime tour.
I do not think it is good for children under 12. As the guide is a believer in ghosts and has had encounters with them!!
He also tells some stories of historic Monterey! I loved the history!! But, some of it is graphic!
You start the trolley tour in a cemetery to 'meet' the people you will hear about!
A great time and I recommend it!!!

When I bought a ticket for the Ghost Tour, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Once aboard the trolley, the tour guide, Gary, played spooky themed music (some of which was kind of comical). The first stop was in a cemetery. Gary told us about some of the cemetery's residents. To me, the stories of these residents and the dark history of mid-nineteenth century Monterey was incredibly interesting. From there, the tour continued to the supposedly haunted homes/businesses in town. We were able to get out and walk around and take pictures of a few places, but for only a few minutes. It would be nice if we could've walked around the "haunted" buildings longer or even if it could be worked out to go inside some of the buildings. Overall, it was a great tour and I would recommend it.

I just took this tour and am sorry to say that this tour was lame. The first hour is spent in a grave yard with the tour guide standing on graves telling stories. He literally stands on the graves, and guides his tour group directly over graves to different sites in the grave yard. You have no choice but to step on them. I found this to be really disrespectful to the memory of those buried there.
The first hour was pretty tough also because the tour guide first tells one story for around thirty minutes and, while he stands directly on top of a grave, uses a flashlight to show you pictures he has from an old book. it gets boring quick he's not a great story teller nor orator.
He then proceeds to other graves and stands on them too, and tells, more stories. After about an hour you go see three locations, you only stand outside, you never go inside, and he ties the locations into his previous stories.
That's it. You'd do better researching Monterey ghost stories and driving around for an hour at night. Not worth the money. I really can't understand why this tour got such high ratings.

I have to say that I was really looking forward to this tour when my boyfriend and I were visiting Monterey. There is so much history in this town with many of the same restored historic buildings still standing that I felt there would be enough spooky stories and stops to provide us with a creepy good time. We boarded this fantastic trolley in front of the Portola Hotel @ 8:30pm and off we went to explore Old Haunted Monterey with Gary our tour guide.
The first thing I noticed as we began our tour was that it was becoming rather chilly and there was a foggy haze that was setting in which made the start of our tour much more atmospheric. Gary took us to various locations that were supposedly haunted and let us get out and explore and take pictures at each location which was alot of fun even though I never saw any ghostly images or orbs in any of my photos. The thing is, although the tour was fun and very interesting, it really did feel more like a history tour than a ghost tour. I didn't feel that the spooky stories were all that effective and as animated and emphatic a story teller as Gary was, the tour felt a bit cheesy (on the spooky side of things not on the history side) and I took most of the "supposed hauntings" with a grain of salt as who knows if they're legitimate or not.
I will say that if the tour was called the "History Trolley of Old Monterey" than I may have taken the tour more serious and would've felt the spooky stories were an added bonus. But as a "Ghost Tour" it was just ok in my opinion and I felt that it was more interesting history wise than it was ghost wise. I even felt this way when we stopped at a historic Monterey cemetery at the end of the tour which I will admit was dark and spooky but in all honesty, cemetery's are spooky enough on their own at night with or without a ghost tour. This is not to say that I wouldn't recommend this tour...to the contrary. In my opinion, if your visiting Monterey and looking for a way to fill up your time with something a little different, then going on this tour is for you. Even though it's not really all that scary and more about the history than anything else, you'll still get a fun time out of it which in the end is all that really matters:-)

I have been on many ghost tours and this one is one of my favorites. I highly recommend it. I brought my dog with me on this tour, and he was very welcomed on the tour. If your are bring your dog call ahead first. I believe there are some restrictions. I loved that stories were told then we were set loose to investigate the areas a bit. The tour guide is very good at story telling.

No ghosts (but who really expects them on a tour like this) and as a ghost hunter myself, I'm not really into orbs.
But, don't let that deter you from this great history tour told from a paranormal perspective. I ended up buying the book that's sold because the tour was so much fun and the history so interesting. Even my friend who isn't into history had a great time. And, bonus - you can bring your dog if it weighs under 40 lbs.!

I took my teens boys and their friend. It was a lot of fun and awesome tales. We went back to the places we visited the next day during daylight hours. We made future plans to visit the restaurant.

My name is Ivan and the ONLY reason I didn't give this a 5 is because I wish it was a longer tour!!! At the same time an hour and a half is a lot better than most I would think. Gary, your tour guide, just gives you so much history that at the end of the trip, you just want to keep on going! Gary takes this tour over the top with his vast knowledge and excellent story telling. The trolley is pretty sweet as well. Gary sets the scene up for ya by playing music during your trip through Monterey. I have been to Monterey time and time again, love it there, but he showed us some sites that I never even knew existed and I have driven past them NUMEROUS times. The cemetary was the best intro, the way he set that up, GOOD [--] Gary!!! For $28 a ticket, best value for a tour in Monterey period. I am a skeptic from the word go, but I took some VERY questionable pics that night. I am ready to go again, no question about it!!

I took this tour with my 12 year old son and 9 year old daughter. It was exceptional! I was thoroughly terrified and intrigued by Gary and his fantastic real stories. It was great to hear so much history and eerily fun too. We caught a lot of orbs on our camera which really was the icing on the cake. Gary is a terrific tour guide and I am recommending the tour to everyone I meet. I really didn't expect it to be as fantastic as it was. Thank you so much for a brilliant night out.

The Ghost Tour of Monterey [http://www.toursmonterey.com/gpages/gtourdetails.html] was an interesting paranormal flight of fancy into Old Monterey where we run around in a motorized trolley (to this San Fran native, a modified cable car!) and explore a few historical sites.
I checked out the website as well. The photos are supposedly "orbs of spirits" but really are simple reflections of light on the camera lens. But I digress.
Although expensive at $28.00 for adults, there are several things that made the trip worth it in my experience. Gary the driver was very knowledgable about the ins and outs of history of the area. He would talk about his experiences as a tour guide and how some people told him to knock it off regarding his ghost stories for fear he would drive away business or some such. He even claimed to have the ancestors of the villains of the past come to his tour.
Several notes of interest: I did enjoy the fact that the tour stops and lets us out to explore certain buildings wehre we can. We stopped at the San Carlos Cathedral built over a hundred years ago, where supposedly the long-dead pastor still occasionally answers the door to counsel his flock. Several of the group knocked on the door while I scurried around the back. Nice Spanish architecture, statutes and columns made this a paradise for a architecture nut like myself.
We went to a few other places too: a hanging from a tree that is still standing (we touched it). A graveyard, home of a notorious victim or two (we walked it!). And a former ranch, now restaurant, that still houses the former owners who are mad about losing the property. Knock knock!
No spirits or sprites appeared during my tour. However, a few well-meaning if misguided fans were attempting to "scare up" some ghosts but they way they acted with yelling and knocking around, it was more a scare for me than any spirit!
Gary even went a bit out of his way to explore a few more sites, even though it was late. The 90 minute tour was more like two hours which was never boring.
I do recommend it!

Is the WineTrolley account a troll? Most of the reviews are good but those replies are just...yikes lol like if that's the actual person I don't know. Does it affect the tour at all or is he more chill in person?
(Want opinions from actual guests please)

I don’t live under a bridge 🧙
Well from what I seen about Gary remark was very unprofessional and to state the things he stated well would make not even want to take this tour. Like really you call yourself professional....... maybe the stuff Stacy stated was true...... hmmmm maybe think twice before you answer peoples remarks and I think your bottom was answer was perfect and professional "Thank you" you cant please everyone but you sure lower your standards to her level....

Gloria, please do the Ghost tour of Monterey a favor and DON'T take our tour. Rehashing past BOO BOO CRAP just shows how much YOU NEED TO GET A LIFE. If you were not present on the tour in question how could you be SO JUDGMENTAL? Oh BTW I give a Ghost Tour and would not EVER want to be what you would consider a "professional".
HAPPY FACE :)

Are children allowed on this tour? What ages can they be to attend?

It really depends on the child. We focus more on historical hauntings rather than scary moments. Children from 10 up are usually good, but again it depends on your child. Sometimes I do get carried away and slip in a bad word!
The person who also commented on this question was intoxicated on one of our tours forcing me to try and hush her and her group while I conducted the tour. I quickly learned that she was only concerned about herself and no one else and would not reframe from immature behavior. Now her purpose in life seems to be monitoring our pages on TA and casting stones. We truly feel sorry for her sad and lonely dilemma.
