Other than a beautiful day, we had high hopes. Trail well worn, but no idea along the way where you were at in the journey so we had no idea of how much longer until we reached the overlook, which we are still not sure if we got that far. The terrain was really rocky and steep 30% of the time and we weren’t really prepared for that . But we had great exercise and picnic along the way .

Great hike. Rucked 30 lbs, made it out OK, but it was challenging. On your hike down to the falls from the trailhead you will get a sense of how steep the hike back up will be. It's well maintained, but no facilities at the trailhead or otherwise. Falls were at a trickle but still worth seeing. It's incredibly hard to capture the scope of the falls with a picture. Not much for blazing or signage, but it's pretty straightforward, and only 1 spot about 1.7 miles in where the trail takes a bit of a u-turn and I wasn't confident I was on the correct trail for a bit.

This is a moderate to difficult hike that really comes to life after a strong rain fall.

There are a few smaller falls on this trail and many beautiful streams and creeks to explore - they only come out to life after a strong rainfall. If you want to see the best of this trail then come the day after a rain storm.
Expect to get muddy and take your time as it will be slippery.

I wrote a blog on it on my site: kirks(dot)guide :)

Hemmed-in Hollow is beautiful, even in the summer months. It's a must see! Make sure to bring lots of water and some snacks. While the hike down doesn't seem too difficult, the hike back is straight uphill. When we finished, my Apple watch said that I had done 77 flights of stairs. We are in decent shape and go hiking quite often, but we even stopped a few times to take a breather. Of course, it was 90 degrees when we hiked it, so that could be why.

We floated on the Buffalo River, and pulled out to hike to the falls. What a great idea to do this! It's a gorgeous site to see! Definitely a must. The hike is not difficult to do from the river.

I have been to Hemmed in Hollow twice and it never disappoints. It's the tallest waterfall between the Appalachians and the Rockies. Now, if you are expecting tons of water gushing over rocks like some of the other Arkansas waterfalls, this one is a bit different. The water falls somewhat quietly from high rocks, and lands on the rock platform below, often moving several feet depending on how the breeze is blowing. It's a great place to rest and just take in the scenery!

Hemmed-in Hallow is a must see if you are kayaking the Buffalo River. The bluff towers above you as a waterfall decends over the edge above. The hike is not long, but a lot of narrow paths, rocks & tree roots. Wear good water shoes for both kayaking & the hike. It is so worth it because how many times in your life do you get to stand in a waterfall??!!

The falls were defiantly worth the hike in. However the river was closed to floating so we hiked in from the parking lot and it was very strenuous. One source says it is over 1000' of elevation change on the hike out. There are some smaller falls on the way in when you get closer to the main falls.

My husband and I hiked the Compton trail down and then took the old river trail and came out at Centerpoint. We got a later start than expected due to spending extra time on Hawks Bill Crag and Glory Hole Falls trails. We started about 6:00 and it took us about an hour and a half to get down to the base of the trail. We skipped the falls so that we would have some daylight to set up camp. We camped at the base of the Hemmed in Hollow trail, by the river. It was an awesome experience. The next day we woke up and left our packs in the tent by the river and hiked up to the falls.
The Falls are SOOOOOO amazing. It took my breath away. It had been raining off and on for the few days prior so there was pretty good flow. No pictures can do it justice. We hiked down the trail from hemmed in hollow to the river because we thought that would be easier and felt like the river crossing would not be that bad, WELL it was super high and there was no way we could have crossed it. I think if we had tried the water would have been at least to my chest and I am 5'7. That combined with the very cold and swift moving water was not a risk we were willing to take. I am glad we went that way because it was a pretty hike and we got a really good view of the river. So we hiked back up to the hollow and down the main trail to our campsite. We packed back up and headed on. Be aware that when trying to get to Centerpoint from the old river trail, there are not very good trail markings, It was a short distance but mildly difficult even with the map. When you cross the river from the hemmed in hollow trail- you will go right- up the hill and then you will come to the old cabin. If you're looking at the front of the cabin, the Centerpoint trail is to the left- this trail splits almost immediately, but this spot is marked (or was when we were there). You will go right at the split and you'll go up a steep mile to the goat trail spur. It is totally worth it to do that if you're hiking that way. Once back on Centerpoint trail it is a pretty steep and rocky 2.5 miles to the trailhead. We had the Buffalo Outdoor center shuttle our car and had no problems with them.

About the difficulty of trails- I do not work out, and would be hard stretched to jog a mile without stopping, but I could do this trail. It was in the 50's and I was sweating a lot, so I could not say how I would have done in the summer. However, we did not hike out the Compton trailhead. The Compton trail has multiple areas where you may feel like you are climbing over rocks 2-5 feet- there are good foot holds- I am a clumsy person but I wore appropriate foot wear (soloman hiking boots) and with care I did not slip even though the rocks were wet from the rain earlier in the day. Hiking out of centerpoint was pretty rough- but we had hiked about 11 miles on the 1st day and about 8 miles on the second day so It may have had some to do with exhaustion. If I had to do it again, I would try to do the hike the opposite direction because centerpoint was steep for almost the entire 2.5 miles to the trailhead from the goat trail. Compton is steep, but it is only about a mile- It just depends on what your group is up for.

2.5 miles down with steep sections.....means 2.5 miles up! Not anything spectacular until you get to the falls and then it depends on rain amounts on rather there is much falling. Great workout though ! Take water and snack!
