We were fortunate enough to choose Rob for three wonderful days in Cape Town. Before the visit Rob worked carefully with us to plan and design our time together. His pre-tour planning was a nice mix of taking our suggestions as well as including his own thoughts and ideas. He encouraged our interests but was honest in providing his opinions when it looked we were going a bit off base.
Each morning we met to plan the day's schedule to make sure we were well organized and prepared. His vehicle was spacious and well stocked with water and umbrellas (we did have one rainy day). The tours were well planned for traffic, crowds and weather. He was flexible enough to "move on" when we were ready to do so and to relax and hang back a bit when we wanted more at a particular stop.
Rob is passionate about South Africa and extremely knowledgeable. He provided us with all of the facts and figures as well as the in-depth background that only a Captonian can know and understand. He was patient with our questions and giving of his knowledge.
We saw the major tourist sites but also experienced some of the less frequented places that helped us to enjoy our visit even more. While Rob was excellent during the Cape Town, Cape Peninsula and suburban touring where he really showed his stuff was on the wine tour. Rob is a wine maker himself and gave us some really special insight into South African wines and wineries. And his choice of restaurants during the three days was great including a farm to table place in the hills and a beautiful spot overlooking the ocean.
Rob is one of the best and most knowledgeable tour guides we have ever hand I can recommend him without hesitation to anyone who wants an extraordinary tour of Cape Town and the surrounding area.

We visited Robben Island during a three hour tour on Sunday this week.
Do suggest that one gets tickets early as buying tickets just before departure can be disappointing, either with no place in the ferry or long lines.
The ride to and from Robben Island was comfortable, about 20 minutes each way. At the island one is reminded of the cruelty that existed during the apartheid years in South Africa. On the other hand, the belief and perseverance of some inmates, including the late Nelson Mandela, enabled South Africa to ultimately gain freedom.
Our guide was an ex-political prisoner, Derrick Basson. He took us around the Maximum Security Prison and told me he was one of nine surviving inmates. His personal insights made the walk through the prison grim and chilling after hearing about how inmates were treated.
Adjacent to the prison is a small shrine of Sayed Abdurohman Moturu, the Sheikh of Madura. He was an Indonesian prince who led a political resistance against the Dutch East India Company and died on the island in 1754.
Do visit Robben Island when visiting Cape Town. This is a historic place you can visit even on a rainy or windy day when the Table Mountain may not be accessible.

Cape Town has a lot to offer, but we weren't certain how to priority everything and were a bit at a loss as to how to get around to maximize our days. Diane, our friend/agent at Africa Direct USA, highly recommended Beautiful Cape Town Tours so we took her advice and booked a day with them.
"Them" turned out to be Rob. Rob met us in our hotel lobby and before we left he wanted to sit down and talk about what to do on our tour. He had some laminated maps and a marker and he proceeded to give us an overview of Cape Town and the sites we could potentially visit. He then asked us several leading questions to get a better idea of what kind of experience we wanted for the day. Between the three of us we decided we wanted to see penguins and interact with people around Cape Town. Off we went!
While driving us to our first stop Rob gave us more details on Cape Town and its history; painting a picture so that we could better appreciate and understand what we were seeing. He also patiently answered every one of our questions even though I'm sure that at times we seemed a little dense. His discussion wasn't just surface-level as he delved down into the historical cultural/racial issues that South Africa has faced and still face today.
Our first stop was the fish dock at Kalk Bay. As soon as Rob got out of the car he was greeted by the ladies who manage the dock. It was obvious that they knew each other quite well and were good friends. It was so enjoyable to be around these ladies as they worked their trade and sold their fish. We then walked over to Kalky's and shared some of the "best fish and chips in the world". (They're certainly the best I've ever had.)
Our tour then continued to Boulder Beach where we visited the penguin colony. Once again, Rob shared his extensive knowledge of the penguins, their past, and their uncertain future. Rob really knows his Cape Town stuff; regardless of the topic!
We stopped for lunch at a little village restaurant in a converted barn. This was a charming place and definitely local food. Delicious food and more great conversation!
Our final stop, after driving through some incredible scenery, was at Original T-Bags in Hout Bay. Here we met Nomsa and the other ladies who make incredible art, handbags and more out of used tea bags. The backstory here is that a lady from England, Jill Heyes, moved to the area and was appalled at the poverty and lack of hope of the local Imizamo Yethu people. She and a friend came up with the idea of re-purposing tea bags to create art. Their idea and their products bloomed and now Original T-Bags is known world-wide and has provided a good living and futures for the ladies who do this magic with tea bags. This turned out to be a heart-warming and soul touching experience that we will treasure forever!
As you can see, Rob created a custom tour that was perfect for us. We got to cross of our bucket-list item of seeing penguins in the wild and we met some incredible people in Cape Town. What a day. What a day!
I highly recommend Beautiful Cape Town Tours; regardless of whether you have 1 day in Cape Town or 20 days. It doesn't matter....it just matters that you book a tour and get Rob's personal gift of Cape Town and its people.

Rob took four of us - all experienced travelers - on a full-day tour of Capetown and its surrounding areas. We ranged from wine country to beach to mountain (Table Top gondola), beginning with a very informative and fascinating tour of Capetown's fabulous and diverse botanical gardens. Rob is an incredible source of information, both historically and technically, and gave us all kinds of insights in to the history of Capetown and its current day status. He is energetic beyond belief but gets it all in, depending on your interests.
We recommend him MOST highly. Best for adults.

My friends and I had only 2 days to spend in Cape Town, as a consequence, we d have to make wise decisions. I don´t like group tours, so, I started looking for a private tour in Cape Town. And I found Rob.
I explained to him that I d live to see some of the nature beauties from Cape town, but my friends would like to go to a winery.
We had the best experience ever!!!
Rob shared so many information about the city, the culture, wine...
We had an amazing and intense day!
And Rob is an amazing person, funny and relaxed!

It was an absolute pleasure to spend the day touring with Rob! My husband and I met Rob first thing in the morning at our Cape Town hotel and he came armed with maps to help us plan out our day and excellent conversation! We ended up changing our itinerary completely and went with Rob's recommendations (all of which were brilliant). We loved the fact that the majority of the places we visited were not typical tourist "hot spots" so we actually got a feel of the local life. We visited Kirstenbosh gardens, a local fish market, Boulders beach and a private vineyard. We also stopped along the way for a delicious lunch. The day flew by and we gained so much from the private tour that we felt it was really worth the money! Rob is an excellent tour guide.

The tour with Rob was the best we have ever attended - and we travel a lot. He was totally flexible during the tour, was able to answer all out questions and had a lot of background information you don't find in a guide book, showed us places we hadn't seen so far on previous visits to Cape Town and managed to keep even our 4 year old son interested and entertained for 6 hours. The whole tour felt like being shown around by a friend, not just a guide. This is probably due to the fact that Rob travels a lot himself, has seen so many places already and really enjoys what he is doing.
Rob managed to make it a very special day for all of us and if you want to get to know the Cape region really well, Rob is the man to book.

Rob proved to be an outstanding tour guide choice. 1st day was in Cape Town, visited museums, Table Top Mountain, walked funky old district, lunch in a botanical garden. Day 2, saw penquins, tea bag art project, fish market, etc. Rob also arranged for a helicopter tour of the peninsula. He was very knowledge of S.A. history, took us to places off the generic bus tour routes, giving us the opportunity to meet and interact with the locals. Rob is the best.

Send your query to Rob. I am a reviewer. though I would say do Robben Island yourself - go to the V&A waterfront and you can buy tickets from the official Robben Island ferry office there - best done a day or two in advance.
