Whilst it was a little expensive, these places take a lot of upkeep.
Interesting Priory that housed a small group of Canons rather than monks. Lovely stonework, crypt like area and plenty of information.
I also reccomend visiting tbe adjoining church (free) and the tea room just up the road.

This was just so disappointing. The entrance fee is high for the short time there as there is not a great deal to see. In fact, a good pasrt of the priory can be seen and imagined by visiting the church next door and leaving a donation. We were told there is no toilet but there is...at a cafe on site. We were told the cafe was closed for a wedding...but it was open. NOt worth the walk off the wall...go to Hexham by train instead.

Visited many times. Quiet and peaceful with a great cafe nearby. If you are passing through Carlisle or Brampton make a detour.

After a restful night at Lanercost Equestrian & Country Estate we walked through the village to continue our walk along Hadrian's Wall Path. We went through the beautiful grounds of this priory & as we passed a gentleman he told us the priory was open & we were welcome to have a look inside if we wished.
It is beautifully preserved and entry to the churches free while there is a cost to visit the ruins of the original medieval buildings.

"for operational reasons" English Heritage shut their part of the priory. I'd pre-booked, and they emailed me 2 hours after I arrived. However, as you can see most of what there is to see from inside the church (free), from the shop upstairs (free) or from the path around the back (free) I probably won't hurry back

Large car park although not all the people are visiting the priory. Excellent little EH shop and welcome. The story of the priory and then subsequent use, including the continual use of the church, is fascinating. Good educational boards in the grounds explaining the groundworks / ruins.
It is worth reading about the Ducre's and the Howards as the whole area of Northumberland and Cumbria is affected by these families.
Our Wall walker's diverted to look at the priory and use the coffee shop. They said it was well worth taking the time off the trek.

There was a service on in the church when we arrived so we spent the first part of the visit wandering around the priory ruins. Being EH members entrance was free. The are information boards situated around the ruins which give a good insight into its long history, and the ruins gave some great photo opportunities. Once the service had finished, we had a look around the main church which was also interesting. We then went to the small café and had a lovely cake and drink before moving on.

Great historical display giving some serious info on English King Edward 1st who (had to) stay there in winter of 1306/7 and having the Privy Seal there signified England was ruled from Lanercost for 6 months (later died on the Solway coast apparently)

Superb old ruin part of which is now a church. Good parking, coffee shop and gift shop make it a good stopping off point.

Are guided tours available ?

Sorry for the delay. I have never yet come across guided tours simply because of the lack of staff. As others have said, the staff on duty are always extremely helpful and I haven't yet met one who wasn't very knowledgeable about the place. This is often extended well beyond the Priory history but includes the environment and wildlife, too, and I have had several fascinating conversations about the local birdlife.
It's also a good experience if you encounter a church warden or other member of the congreagation of the part of the priory used for public worship as they are often both very helpful and knowledgeable too.

Are there any cab companies that take you from Gretna green to lanercost priory and back, or ones that I can book by the hour and take me between England and Scotland?

I wouldn't advise to use a taxi, as you could pay up to double their price. They could charge you to pay for their petrol to take you there and back. If you wanted the person to wait for you, they could charge you for that as well. It would be better to either have someone you know to take you, if you pay half of their petrol costs, or to go by coach. If you drive, it would be a lot better to drive there yourself.

Is it a dog friendly area? Are dogs welcome in the team rooms?

The tearoom has a special area dedicated to dogs! Owners eat at tables and the dogs are supplied with water and bowls for food. I do not own a dog but it was well publicised and seemed very practical for dog owners.

Hi, certainly the area around the shop, cafe and small museum is wheelchair accessible, The only slight difficulty is that the car park is gravel, which I know from experience can cause problems with a wheelchair, but once you get from the car park onto the paved area, it is fine.
The route to Lanercoste church and to the priory entrance is all paved and flat, and you would be able to get into the church.
However, I think you would have difficulty getting into the priory itself. The entrance is through the shop, which is quite narrow, and from what I remember, to explore the whole priory site, it is on two or three levels. So, assuming you can get through the shop, you would see the main priory part, but there would be parts - I think where the dining hall/kitchens were - that you would not be able to get to.
I would give English Heritage a quick call just to check exactly what is accessible, but if you do go, I hope you enjoy the visit. It is in a very tranquil location.

Are there guides in a Sunday? Are the tea rooms open in a Sunday.
Oldilocks

Yes - both the tea room and the Priory are open on Sundays. The church is still used as the local Parish church with regular services, however visitors are made very welcome if they wish to join in with the service, but obviously you can't sight see during the service in the church, but you can wander round the rest of the Priory whilst services are in progress and then go into the church after the service. Guide books are available and the English Heritage staff will direct you to points of interest but don't give formal tours to individuals, as far as I am aware.

Hello,
I wonder if you could help me solve a 20 year mystery? Sometime in the 90's on a glorious summer's day we visited the delightful ruins of what I think may have been Lanercost Priory. The memory has always stayed with me but I have never been entirely sure of the exact location of this memory. I associate the memory (maybe incorrectly) with a weekend spent at the Brampton Folk Festival, hence my speculation that it could have been Lanercost. I remember it being very beautiful and incredibly peaceful but the what impressed me most of all was when we peeped into the nearby church, not intending to enter as we were accompanied by our much-loved (and now deceased) cocker spaniels. We were immediately beckoned forward and ushered in, the 'greeter' insisting most warmly that ALL were welcome here even those with 4 legs. I have never forgotten this most special and inclusive church. Please could you tell me if I am correct in thinking that it may have been Lanercost.
Very best regards,
Bernice

Bernice A further thought is that if you call up Google maps you can link to selection of photos of the Priory which may just confirm your memories, or maybe not! It is worth a try.John C.
