I’m not really a fan of military museums but entry to this one was included in our castle ticket entry so we figured why not.
We received a very lovely, enthusiastic welcome from the lady working there. Unfortunately I didn’t get her name. She welcomed us, told us about the museum and let us wander around at our own pace. It was such a delight to be welcomed in such a way. It really did make our visit and encouraged me to spend more time within the museum and see more of the exhibits.

A great evening event at the museum, very well presented and put together by the museum team. A superb and unusual venue for any business or social function, highly recommended .

You get free entry with your admission to Carlisle Castle. Definitely don’t miss this out. It’s amazing. So much to see. So many interesting artefacts. You will learn so much

A cracking little museum, showing the military history of the area, well cared for exhibits that explain the different uniforms and weapons of the various times.

We honestly didn’t know this existed until we went to the cafe next door and saw the shop portion through the front door. When we first went and we thought it was just a little museum, but we soon realized that it wrapped around the cafe and had all sorts of nooks and crannies. Their corners were stuffed full of wartime memorabilia with the majority of it being genuine. I was especially fascinated by the personalized letters spread around the different areas. This is a must to see, especially if you’re always intending to visit the castle!

Although military museums can be a bit cold and not particularly engaging (I'm thinking Leeds Armouries, for example) this compact and well-organised museum manages to entertain, intrigue, inform and move the interested visitor. The numerous displays are interesting, well-labelled and present an absolute treasure-trove of genuine artefacts, posters and souvenirs presenting the story of the local King's Own Royal Border Regiment throughout its illustrious history but - even more cleverly - whilst managing to ground that story in the context of the many important wars and global events that have shaped the United Kingdom over that timescale.
This is a great museum for those who love museums, for those who don't like museums and also for helping children to understand simply those forces and events which have made our country what it is today. I highly recommend a visit.

We visited Cumbria's Museum of Military Life located in Carlisle Castle whilst on a short break to the city on a weekend in July. The castle itself is managed by English Heritage and entrance is free to members, though I cannot say if it is possible to visit the Museum of Military Life independent of this.
The museum is housed in one of the 19th century barrack buildings inside the castle and is not large, however it is worthy of a visit in its own right. Here the visitor will find a plethora of exhibits ranging from the Napoleonic conflicts, through two world wars almost up to the present day.
Having read much about the Napoleonic wars, I was particularly interested in the scale model of an infantry ‘square’ formed as a defence against cavalry but vulnerable to artillery fire.
The exhibits also include examples from the home front with enlistment posters encouraging men to join the armed forces and mock-up of a 1940’s living room with a soldier (presumably home on leave), reading a newspaper by his taped up windows.
Most interesting and well worth a visit.

Super sub museum of the main Carlisle Castle. Make sure it is included in your entrance fare. There is so much to see and take in. The exhibits start from the formation of the regiment to current time. Wonderful display of artefacts.

I am touring by Motorcycle - is there parking for such on site? Security of luggage is the concern. Also I am interested in any history on Cpt John Brooks WW1, pre and post - can you help?

Unfortunately as Judy has pointed out, parking on the Parade Square is for staff and Blue Badge holders only.
There is a pay and display car park next to the castle which is a short distance away

Hi, We are visiting Carlisle on 11th Feb and as my father served in the Border Reg. in WW2 I want to visit the museum. Is there a car park please ?

Hello, the nearest car park to us is Devonshire Walk pay and display which is just round the corner from the castle. However if you are a disabled badge holder you can park inside the Castle.
