We arranged our whole trip to Crete and mainland Greece with Anna Zika at Tripin Adventures.
We are 100% happy with our decision.
From the planning stage to all the details we chose with Anna’s advice. It was one if our best trips, and we travel a lot!
The excursions, accommodation, driver, and guides were stellar.
We felt like welcome guests from the beginninh and soon felt like friends. We felt absolutely safe and trust we will travel with Anna and Tripin again!
What a wonderful way to explore Greece and all it has to offer.

Hiking in Crete with Dimitris Papageorgiou of Tripin Adventures
Dimitris Papageorgiou organized and led a fabulous 7-day hiking trip for 8 adults (4 couples) in Crete in October 2024. Our trip started in Heraklion, where we stayed in a very comfortable and well-situated hotel on the harbor. Dimitris led us on a visit to the excellent Archaeological Museum and the following day to Ancient Knossos, and on each visit we were joined by another guide who is an expert on Minoan history. Dinner was at an exceptionally good Greek restaurant, casual but serious in its modern interpretation of Greek cuisine. It opened our eyes to what Greek food can be and the modern farm to table movement in Greece.
Then we were off to some great hiking in the foothills of the White Mountains, a rugged but beautiful range in central Crete. The best and longest hike was through the Samaria Gorge, the highlight of any hiking in Crete, with a night at the southern end of the gorge in the small village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The other hikes were varied and interesting, with historic and archaeological sites to see along the way, some great swimming opportunities and always a good hotel and fine meal at night. We covered about 45 km over the course of 5 days of moderate hikes with one long hike (Samaria Gorge, 16 km).
There are many guides who can lead you on a tour of Crete. What sets Dimitris apart are: (1) He is fit and a very good, experienced hiker. He not only knows the obvious trails, but in his spare time he works with an organization that documents ancient paths all but forgotten in time. He may take you on a walk along some of these paths, the way people traveled from town to town, village to village in historic times. These hikes were very special. (2) He is not all about hiking. He is keyed into the farm to table restaurant scene in Crete and can take you to incredible restaurants, both simple and special, and knows what to order. If that is one of your interests (it was for us), he's your man. His choices and recommendations were unfailingly excellent. (3) He has a great knowledge of Greek and Cretan history and was an excellent guide at Knossos, Rethymno, Chania and Arkadi Monastery. (4) He is a really fine person who became more than a guide. (5) For part of our trip Dimitris had a second guide join us, Stefanos Mastrotheodoros. He is an old friend of Dimitris, a former guide himself and now a university professor at a local university. He is thoughtful, knowledgeable, fit, and was ever present wherever needed. He was a great complement to Dimitris.
We recommend Dimitris and his Tripin organization enthusiastically, without reservation. We look forward to another hiking adventure with him in the future (perhaps in Northern Greece).

Whether the hospitality of Zorba, the Agean Sea of Ulysses, the Palace of Knossos, or the hike down the Samaria Gorge, Dimitris had it for us. Arrangements and preparation, stories for our visits, leading on our hikes, changing plans on the fly, finding solutions when necessary, we were welcome and well cared for. Dimitris is more than a guide, he is a friend.

Our Tripin tour of Crete was extraordinarily, and I highly recommend our guide Dimitris. The trip combined explorations of Crete’s rich history, hikes through its rugged hills, and enjoyment of its delightful foods and wines. Our group consisted of four couples, all in our 70’s. Dimitris organized all aspects of the trip, selecting very nice hotels and fine restaurants, and enlightened us with his deep knowledge of Greece. A few of the highlights were a guided tour of Knossos and the nearby archeological museum; spectacular hikes, including the amazing Samaria Gorge; swimming in the crystal clear Libyan Sea; and a charming winery visit. Dimitris and a second guide, Stephanos, seamlessly made some adjustments to our itinerary on the fly, for example by substituting boat transportation to shorten a hike. All in all, a great trip with an excellent company.

I first met Dimitris in 2013 on an REI hiking trip in the Greek isles. I said he would guide our family when the grandkids were old enough. Our family of 9 ranging in age from 6 to 68 went to Greece in August for 3 nights in Athens, 1 night in meteora and 5 nights in zagori. Dimitris planned our trip and it was wonderful. We had a fabulous guide at the acropolis in Athens and Dimitris guided us up north. We did challenging, gorgeous hikes, rafted the vikos river, took a cooking class, toured a romaniote synagogue in ioaninna and ate the best food throughout. There were always options on the hikes to accommodate different abilities. Dimitris worked within our budget and everything was included at a reasonable price. I highly recommend tripin adventures.

We had a wonderful time with Tripin Adventures! We had a very tall order for Dimitris: take our extended family of nine people, ages 6 to 60s, on a seven day hiking trip in the north of Greece at the hottest time of year with multiple dietary restrictions and levels of hiking and heat tolerance, all on a fairly tight budget. Needless to say he did a marvelous job. He readily accommodated our food needs (at some AMAZING restaurants that he chose), gave options for shorter hikes for some while also allowing those who wanted to hike more to have that experience, and provided us with interesting information about the area, its culture, and its rich history. He even tailored our trip to have a private tour of the synagogue in Ioannina which was very special. We ended up spending one night in Meteora and the rest of our time was in Dilofo in Zagori. From food, to views, to an INCREDIBLE raft down a river, I cannot recommend TripIn and Dimitris enough.

If you have the opportunity to travel with Tripin Adventures, I highly recommend it! I joined the September 2024 Natural Wonders of Greece trip, co-led by the wonderful Dimitris, and it was one of the best international travel experiences I've had.
From the delicious cuisine and comfortable accommodations to the stunning trails, beautiful river rafting, engaging cooking class, and fascinating archaeological site visits, every detail was thoughtfully planned. Dimitris, with his extensive knowledge of Greece, introduced us to the hidden gems of his homeland, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had him as our guide.
His passion is infectious, and he was always eager to share insights and answer our questions before, during, and after the trip. Dimitris’ flexibility in adapting our plans to suit the group’s needs was greatly appreciated, and his positive rapport with local staff—hotel owners, restaurant personnel, and fellow guides—made our journey even more enjoyable.
He also selected an exceptional bus driver, Spiros, who ensured our travels were smooth and memorable. I am truly grateful for the experiences created by Dimitris and the fantastic team he has built. I hope our paths cross again in the future. Cheers to new adventures—yeia mas!

We did a week long hiking trip with a family of 9 including 3 generations. Dimitris led a wonderful trip! Lots of hiking and seeing some incredible views. We got to experience a more authentic Greek experience. Included white water rafting and a cooking class. Dimitris is incredibly knowledgeable and we felt taken care of the whole time. The trip was also highlighted by some of the most incredible food. I highly recommend this company for any of your trips. We will be looking to book with them again and will send friends!

The trip was planned end to end, with a great balance of local culture, hiking, and overall care for the group wellbeing.

Our Tripin Adventure was amazing! The hikes were challenging but doable and so worth the effort. The villages where we stayed were lovely and quaint and the innkeepers made us feel like family. In fact, one village planned its annual bbq around our stay! That experience, and others, were thanks solely to our guide (and now friend!) Dimitris, who is a wonderful and knowledgeable adventure companion. In addition to leading us from place to place on the hiking trails, Dimitris arranged for amazing meals, making sure we had the specialties of the region (including the wine.) One highlight was the night we were taught how to make our own dinner--which was delightful. Cannot say enough good things about our experience with Tripin! Already thinking about the next trip!
