As we have English heritage membership but not National Trust this is one that had previously not been on our radar so to speak, but it's an excellent place.....informative staff- a guy 'in character ' was great.....the castle is well preserved as the artefacts within .....you can go right to the top where the views are excellent!

This is such a lovely place to visit. The view from the tower is spectacular, you can see Lincoln Cathedral on a clear day. It’s a long climb to the top but we’ll worth it. The grounds are well kept, lot’s of wild life and picnic tables set out on the lawns.

An unexpected gem. We were if truth be told not expecting much from our visit to Tattershall castle but how wrong first impressions can be. We had read that this castle was just one tower with scant decor or objects to see. To some extent this is correct and yet there is an appeal to this building that belays the initial trepidation. The tower itself is an imposing building set in open space surrounded by a moat. The internal basements, rooms, guard rooms, living quarters are deliberately left open and sparse allowing a genuinely informative look at the structure of the building. The information dotted around the castle is presented in good old fashioned boards and offer the right amount of information. It is great to see the history from first build through the civil war, to private ownership and conservation to modern day. From a trip we planned to spend half an hour killing time we stayed comfortably for an hour and a half. Oh but be prepared to hold onto your hats at the top of the tower, the views are great but the wind will whip away anything loose.

We visited the castle whilst staying nearby at Tattershall Lakes (not recommended). As we are NT members we had free entry and paid a notional £4.00 for our 5 year old grandson. We were greeted at the entrance by a very welcoming NT volunteer and everyone we came into contact with were most pleasant and courteous. As it was a very windy day (storm Dudley had arrived) so we knew we had only a short time to climb the 149 steps to the top of the tower to take in the views. The views from the top across the Lincolnshire countryside are spectacular and it is easy to see RAF Coningsby nearby with the Typhoon planes taking off and landing. All in all a very enjoyable visit and highly recommended.

What a find! Ok, as mainstream “castles” go, this lacks the magnitude and branding of say Warwick Castle. However, what it lacks in commercialisation, it more than makes up for in interest factor, authenticity and value for money. Located fairly off the beaten track, this gem is well worth a couple of hours of your time. Run by English Heritage, we visited in the run up to Halloween, and were very pleasantly surprised with the added decoration. On leaving the free car park, you follow a small path past a church, and towards what is the old keep. There are a number of levels to the keep and the 149 step ascent to the top affords fabulous views of the local countryside, and is really worth the effort. Your interest is kept along the way with various information boards, and little nooks and crannies to explore. Outside, there is a moat, and various picnic tables from where to enjoy your packed lunches. On exiting the attraction, there is a small bookshop of interesting used books at £1. For the sum of £13.50 for 2 adults and one child, it represents fantastic value for money, and we were suitably impressed. As it is in very close proximity to a local RAF airbase/runway, aviation enthusiasts may be catered for as an additional bonus with a display of fighter jet training. This is further enhanced by the castles elevated location. At £5 for adults, you would be hard pushed to expect better value for money. Winner all round. 5*

Although there's only the one tower left intact there's still plenty to see. Three entrances lead to 1) the ground floor reception/public room, 2) the stairs to the other floors with state and private rooms and 3) steps down to the cellar / part-time dungeon.

The stairs do eventually lead to the roof - if you have the energy! The views around from the top include Lincoln Cathedral and Boston Stump.

There's information as you go round describing the castles inhabitants and some of its history. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful castle, the admission charges are very reasonable, (which is important as we have a tight family budget) our 6 year old enjoyed the Halloween trail, (which was only £1) and loves his feather pen prize.
Staff very kind and friendly.
We read a couple of stories about castles, and an Usborne book of castles before we went and it really helped our son, he had fun imagining being a Knight, and learnt a little bit of history along the way.
Would be great if the castle had some child friendly info. We will donate a couple of stories and our castle facts book., if you visit with young children have you got a story to take to read while you are there or maybe one to donate?

Wow, This place is totally undersold!!! We saw the rather uninspiring write up on the National Trust website but decided to visit anyway. So glad we did, it is amazing! Very good information plus I bought the guide book. Really interesting and fabulous views from the top, the fighter jets at nearby RAF Conningsby gave a great aerial display too! The staff were friendly and welcoming and the loos must be the cleanest in the entire country! Car parking was nearby and free. Really recommend this castle.

Very early brick built castle with good views, and spacious church nearby containing rare monumental brasses.
We drove there in our motorhome. On arrival there were lots of overhanging tree branches on the approach road and in the car park. These kept catching and scraping the roof making maneuvering difficult. Pruning back to allow a pathway for high vehicles very recommended.

The castle construction is fascinating as its built from local brick, and was surprised they had the skill and number of bricklayers needed for such a large project in the 15 century.
The spiral staircase was a bit tricky to climb if you meet someone comming the other way. An inner hand rail would improve safety.

Quite enjoyable visit.

The church has quite a chequered history, being left derelict in the past. The brasses are interesting because not many survived Cromwell.
As we are NT members, can't comment on if admission charges are reasonable.
