18/4/22 NB - confused with other nearby Rising Sun pubs.

We three middle aged SE Londoners took a couple of younger friends on a day out to the countryside to our favourite spot just beyond the M25 towards West Malling.

We had been to this remote pub many times before in the past (including being with my brothers the day my mum died as it was her favourite pub) but had heard that it was possibly not open any more as Covid had raged around. The reviews on TripAdvisor, Google and elsewhere were confusing as to whether it was still open or not so we took a chance and drove down around lunchtime to check.

Driving down the wiggly, mostly single track, lane from the West Malling direction (topping up withLPG on the A20) we nearly missed it as the signboard was totally decayed with only the frame left.

We parked in the car park with plenty of space. Thankfully the small, old rural pub was open with about a dozen people in the beautiful garden relaxing in the SunShine. Michelle and her daughter were enjoying the day outside too on the bench so confirming some reports that she was still running the pub with a little help. The (now adult) dogs were in the window too, observing the goings on.

We found a picnic bench and settled down then I went into the bar area to find everything had been tidied up. Michelle followed me in and went behind the bar to ask for my order. The selection of cask beers was good as usual so I ordered five pints, Westerham Summer Perle and God's Wallop. There were also cans of Westerham Bulldog, sSpirit of Kent and Summer Perle but we prefer proper pints.

Michelle brought me up-to-date with the pub's changes and history over Covid. The two years were an opportunity to tidy up the whole place and improve facilities. She also explained how on review sites the pub was getting confused with two other local Rising Sun pubs in the area so confusing people in general. Apparently even Google was using pictures of her pub on other pubs' sites. This Rising Sun is definitely in the middle of nowhere and not in Otford.

Michelle also told me that when Covid was emerging she announced the closure (before it was imposed) and was totally busy the last couple of weeks. Since it reopened it was very busy too the first week. She had NOT had Covid at all so was very wary and careful with the patrons, only a couple inside at the time. Please respect her social distancing. We cannot afford to lose such a wonderful person and pub!

Whilst we were leisurely drinking we wandered around the garden and looked at the rare heritage breed chickens in their coups. Someone had taken the time to add some interpretation on A4 sheets which was very useful and interesting. Michelle still kept the heritage cows round the back but we did not see them.

I noticed some signs on the door with the opening hours and also upcoming events till September. The pub had obviously started to have folk concerts and the next one was in May 14th. This would explain images on reviews of bands in the main lounge (which I did not recognise the room because it had changed so much being much tidier).

Michelle was also offering a variety of local ice cream which went down well with the patrons. The usual snacks were available but there was definitely no food (it was often noted in some confused reviews there was food). Many, many years ago when Michelle's husband Peter was still live there used to be proper food being served.

Over the two years that Gardening has also been tidied up with things being repaired and the wild flowers were beautiful in the lawn with lots of the pretty 'Lady's Smock'.

My friend visited the toilet and noted that unfortunately it is the last thing on the renovation list to be sorted. I hope Michelle can find one of her local patrons with skills at refurbishing toilets to help her get them into shape as it is a little embarrassing for her I think.

During our stay there was a constant flow of people coming and going. A mix of locals (she knew the names of) along with walkers and cyclists just passing through.

We left after an hour noticing the abandoned car still reversed into the hedge. Off to Eynsford Castle we went to have a picnic.

A lovely traditional pub with amazing homemade ice cream. Well worth stopping by especially to sit in the garden half way through a walk on the North Downs Way.

We just happened to see a notice on a gatepost on a local walk to say the pub had reopened. My partner used to come here 40 yrs ago & although we’d driven past a few times since, always thought it had closed permanently as the sign ( though very nice) is quite faded & old & it just looks like a cottage from the road. However, it’s open again & a great traditional, rural pub. Friendly landlady & a lovely garden. Call to check it’s open if visiting outside busy hours.

So pleased to rediscover this pub after 35 years. Blink and you can miss it driving past with the high hedge and faded sign. All these years I'd thought it closed but seems it only did so due to Covid. Went last night for the re-opening and again today. Walked there on both occasions. The re opening night was packed and a great atmosphere. Today SWMBO and I were made very welcome by the landlady and her family. Easy to relax and enjoy a pint or two I doubt you will find such a real, authentic pub that hasn't been "modernised". Hoping to make it my local!

A lovely pub which is sadly due to close on 31st January this year. Visited today with 11 other members of London Clarion Cycle Club on our club run from SE London, we were made to feel extremely welcome by the owner, 3 dogs and the cat. The cask beer was of an excellent quality. Very sad to see this pub closing.

Have visted here every year or so and am totaly amazed that it exists. It looks derelict but always serves a fine pint and is filled with 100s of years worth of stuff. It will sadly but not unsurprisingly close at the end of Jan 2019. Read the other reviews for descriptions and warnings. If you always meant to go here (again) go NOW.

I went there two years ago and found the most rude woman running the place. Been back a few times (including today) and found that despite the sign saying walkers and dogs are welcome, the place is always closed.
Today the place was locked. As we walked away some surly chap turned up in a car and said he wasn't opening today.
I've wasted enough time here...

We walked up from Kemsing village to this incredibly special hidden gem. From the outside, the pub and its sign give the impression of a place long closed, but in fact a living real pub and delicious real ale awaits inside.

The landlady was unlocking as we arrived just after midday on a Sunday. She told us her story and the pub’s story. It had been a farmhouse and cowshed and she and her late husband had taken it over in the early 90s. Business was quiet now, as people were reluctant to walk out or to drive and not drink.

We took some pints of ale and admired how utterly homely and unchanged this pub is. If you like cobwebby Gordon’s at Embankment, you’ll like this. It’s the real deal. Piles of old papers and dusty old photos sit around a room that is part living room (which it is) and part pub. The garden has chickens and cats. By the bar is a friendly dog who beat his tail in excitement at our arrival.

I urge you to visit, as pubs like this are few and far between and fading fast. Go and have a beer and be part of something unique and disappearing.

Next time, I will take a train and walk here along the Pilgrim’s Way from Otford.
