Nice flamingos and hot springs
Οκτ 2016

Amazing arid landscapes
Αύγ 2019 • Φίλοι
Lake Magadi is an amazing destination for landscape photographers and bird watchers. The panoramic arid landscapes around the lake are out of this world.

Its also a flamingo breeding ground and also salt mining activities. There is also hot springs where visitors can swim and tented camps if you intend to spend the night there.

Hidden jem - hot springs and Flamingos
Ιούλ 2019 • Ζευγάρια
A two hour (120 km) drive away from Nairobi lays lake Magadi on the bottom of the Rift Walley alone and deserted. The Concervancy is not a product yet but for the early adapters this peacefull area is an experiance all by it self - to be alone with thousands and thousands of Flamingos in a moon-like surrounding.

The lake is a part of the saltfactory and is not your average 5-star Disney-Africa but a piece of African nature hand-in-hand with working industry.

We visited the location during the cold period (July) but because of the low elevation the temperature was still +30C.

For friends of birds, nature and dessert!

Beautiful place, lousy service
Απρ 2019 • Ζευγάρια
The drive to Magadi was ok despite the road diversions with poor signage. Not so much traffic on that road which was really nice. On arrival, there's a barrier where you record your vehicle. Gave us a sense of security. Got to the country club - the buildings are run down and clearly lack maintenance. The sofa sets in the club house are old and tired. The pool area is well cordoned off against young children. Service was average. We booked the tent. It's very squeezed. The bathroom in the tent was shaky and leaked when one showered. The beds were ok. The cost of accommodation in the tent is not worth it. Should be lower but of course, they are the only provider...so.... tough luck. The tents are so close to each other and noise from other users can be disturbing. There are however new cottages which are more expensive than the tents. Although in their brochure, the tents look like they are right next to the lake, that's not true. It's a bit of a distance to the lake and it's cordoned off from the tents and cottages. Visiting the hot water springs was exquisite - I can do this again and again - I highly recommend the visit to the hot water springs.
Overall - the drive to Magadi was good, the club house was disappointing, the service in the club house was disappointing, the tented accommodation was not worth the price but the hot water springs was the best part of the trip.

Hotter than hot
Μάρ 2019 • Φίλοι
We started off from Nairobi heading to lake Magadi. It's like a two hour drive.
Because of my previous experiences, I kept my water bottles and juice in the freezer from Thursday. Saturday morning they were frozen.
Water becomes undrinkable when hot and you yourself are melting.
Clothing I suggest shorts and light dresses for the ladies. Open shoes, large brim hats, shades.
Also if you can carry extra, extra water for the locals you'll find. Coz there's nothing as bad as someone borrowing water. They really have water problems.
When you get to the water springs watch your step it's quite slippery. Sit down first then slide into the water. Don't be scared if it feels hot.
Once in the water stay for a few minutes then get out completely. Feel the breeze then go back in. Don't over stay in water.
After that you'll look ashy but don't worry you'll take a shower at the hotel you left at the entrance. Carry soap and towel.
Have a nice meal and continue drinking water.

I Lived there it was Sensational!

It is a magic place different to a lot of other places in Kenya. Once you pass corner Baridi and the ngong hills you are well on your way to Lake Magadi and Little Magadi. In fact if you know the are you can sneak over to Tanzania as you are not too far from there. The road is/ was company maintained and at one time it was one of the better roads in Kenya. It's about 100 miles and you can take a reasonably leisurely 2.5 to 3 hours to travel. Take plenty of water, Magadi was hotter than Death Valley at times on the salt flats, being similar in nature. You can spot leopard and loin if you are lucky on the early morning road but you are more likely to meet Camels!! When I used to wander into the hills surrounding Magadi for sun downers etc. you will see zebra, hyenas, baboons and the ugly marabou storks fairly commonly and also monitor lizards and jackels. On the small scale, and due to the short and long rains you get locust swarms, praying mantis swarms, and weird aggressive red spiders with claw! Scorpions and Egyptian cobras are common. They have hornets you could put a saddle and numerous birds (obviously pink flamingos by the thousand). They are also home to a rare tilapia that has developed lungs and can breath. They live in the concentrated sodium sequicarbonate lake (that's what gives the lake a mirror finish in the wet seasons) which has very high alkalinity and little dissolved O2 due to the heat. There are many great places to visit for camps and sundowners. hot springs, birds rock, little magadi to name two. As you near magadi you will be hit by the smell akin to rotting cabbage (I'm really selling it now!) that's the concentrates and algae on the lake! Bu the heat will hit you like a hammer. In the hot dry season you can feel your hair crisping so make sure you are covered!!! PS it was late 90s I was there. Oh please REMOVE your rubbish!!!!! BTW Magadi is not cold at night...ever, but I guess that is relative. it's normally hotter than a summer day in the UK! There is a lot of folklore about the healing properties on the hot springs, but I guess salt water of any type is good for skin... I have many stories from this area all are great. Oh and don't get stuck on the lake in the wet season, I did after I came back from climbing Kili, I took my friend for a few scoops across the lake at a geart location I know to watch the sun and see the milkyway, in short I got stuck and had to carry the beer back to base.., There weren't too many beers left by the time I got to the Magadi Sports club!

An incredible place
Σεπ 2018 • Φίλοι
A must visit within easy driving distance of Nairobi.
There is only one route there so it is easy following google maps. Magadi town is strange. Everything revolves around the Tata plant. Once you access through the main check point you will start to see the lake proper and lots of flamingoes.
You stop to pay at the Magadi Club and this is the only real option for food/toilet before entering.
Costs for Residents is KES 500 pp and the same again to camp. We wild camped and it was amazing.
There is a lot of bird life, thousands of flamingo and the hot pools are worth finding (use guide or get directions from the club- although they are again easy to find). Pools are very hot but satisfying. Go for a dip in the morning or late afternoon when the air is cooler.
We camped on a hill camp- incredible views and away from the lake smell and flies.

Great Hot Spring Sites at Lake Magadi, Perfect for a vacation out of Nairobi City.
Φεβ 2018
I got to enjoy the hot spring sites at the Lake Magadi, perfect time to visit is at sunset. It has been proved to have medicinal effects especially on any skin ailments. It's generally very sunny in Magadi, so drinking alot of water is advised because of high rates of dehydration. The food there at the Tata Chemicals Magadi Club Restaurant is awesome with a variety of fruits and meals. Most tourists who visit there also engage in community service i.e. in local schools. The restaurant also has a swimming pool open from around 10am to around 6pm. The trip to Magadi will be more enjoyable with some scenic views of the Tata Chemicals Magadi factory complimented by several site photography.

This is a good place for a daytrip with friends, the temperatures are high during the day and very cold during the night. A night at the tented camps was a great experience.

Beautiful flats, numerous birds, terrible smell
Μάι 2017 • Φίλοι
I've driven across the Magadi salt flats a handful of times now, and rarely have I seen such a beautiful landscape. Though the smell is a bit much (get ready for a powerful blast of rotting eggs), the scenery more than makes up for it, with expansive salt flats filled with flamingoes, storks, ducks, and all other manner of bird, stretching out as far as the eye can see. The road across (if you're going towards Ol'Kiramatian) is a thin, one-way road, which makes it feel as if your driving over the water itself. I'd highly recommend stopping, getting out, and taking a closer look at whatever you happened to find; small bugs and lizards occasionally get caught in the water and die, but the high salt concentration crystallizes them, leaving behind a beautiful salt skeleton..

One tip I'd recommend; on the road, opposite from the factory, there's a steep hill. Drive up that hill for about two minutes, and you'll reach a barely noticeable turn-off towards the lake. Take it, and it'll lead you to a picnic site overlooking the flats, where you can stop, have a biting, and enjoy the scenery outside the range of the smell. I'd recommend trying to get here around sunrise or sunset, as during these times you'll be treated to a chorus of all manner of birds, but really any time will do.
