We visited the Cemetery on our way back to Waikiki from Pearl Harbor. It was nice to end our day walking around the memorial, reading the information and taking in the impressive view.
If you have a car on Oahu, don't miss going to National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

It is worth your time to visit. It is a beautiful place. It also has a great view of downtown Honolulu. It was peaceful. We enjoyed walking around. There are also really nice bathrooms located here. I highly recommend it.

If there is a place of beauty and peace that allows you to reflect on life and those who fought for your freedom, it is here. Beneath the blue sky, you can respectfully walk among the graves and admire the names of those who fought in the different wars. The walk up to the Memorial is mesmerizing, esp. with the huge, old trees lining the boulevard. You are greeted by Lady Columbia (large central statue) as you climb up the stairs, where there is a hidden chapel and galleries of historical war events mapped out in impressive detail -- many in gorgeous mosaics. You will also find breathtaking views of Waikiki, Diamond Head and the airport from a look-out point furnished with benches and a nice breeze. This is a really special place and I'm so glad I visited here; it's like heaven on earth. I learned some history from the magnificent galleries too. A great experience. Wheelchair/stroller access to the Memorial. Washrooms at the Chapel and Visitor Centre. Free entry. Open 8am-6pm.

Grumpy has been wanting to come here for quite awhile. There is marked parking at the visitor center. Do not park in the area marked for funerals - this is still an active burial site and burials may be going on. Make sure to visit the exhibits inside the visitor center before going into the ranger area. Take a map of the graves but be forewarned: we told them of several errors on the map grave numbers not matching the actual sites. They were surprised and said they will update the map (but who knows how long that will take.) Be advised that Grave 1-A, the first internment in the cemetery, was of an unknown soldier killed in Pearl Harbor, but there no longer is a marker. The unknown soldier was recently (2 years ago?) identified through DNA testing, his family was found, his body exhumed, and he is now buried near his home. The workers in the cemetery itself are amazingly helpful in tracking down graves that you can't find or are incorrect on the map. We had two trying to help us find out what happened to grave 1 A (now a blank area) and by the end, 6-8 workers ended up coming together to give us the information listed above. Unbelievably helpful workers! This site is well worth the visit. Take your time, bring your hat and sunscreen, go to the monument, and follow your visit with a gorgeous view from the mountaintop off Round Top Drive.

A beautiful place to learn about the Pacific campaign in WW2 and the Korean and Vietnam Wars and the tremendous sacrifices made by so many Americans.

This is an solemn place that serves to remind us of the importance of the sacrifice that others haven't given to us. This is a large cemetery honoring the war dead from the Pacific. There are maps of the significant battles that happened in the Pacific Theater.

Where on earth can you find dignity, beauty and serenity in one place? This is THE place. The very first time we got there via a tourist trolley, we didn’t know what to expect. Once the trolley started going inside slowly, the presence of dignity and serenity were so strong that I just couldn’t deny its presence. The experience was so real and intense that we had to revisit this place on our very last day before departure. This is certainly one of the most memorable moments in our lives.

Meget smukt sted, som virkelig sætter tankerne igang.
Foruden kirkegården er der kort og beskrivelser af de forskellige krigsslag.
På vejen op til kirkegården findes endvidere et meget lille museum.

This is an absolutely beautiful & very well done cemetery/memorial. My great uncle's name is here. He died at sea on the USS Franklin in WWII, so we came to find & leave flowers below his name. Even though it is right in the middle of Honolulu, it was so peaceful! I think the walls of the crater block out the noise of Honolulu.
I loved all the quotes around the cemetery. I truly believe this place gives honor to those who have fallen for our freedom in the Pacific wars. Even though I never met my great uncle, it brought tears to my eyes. It was overwhelming to see all the names of those who died in these wars to give us our freedom.
It is an actual cemetery as others have mentioned, so it is to be treated as one, but I believe it is a good stop even if you don't have family here, just to get a sense of how many people died for us & what the cost of our freedom was, especially after visiting Pearl Harbor.
I am so thankful there is a place that lists the names of those who died & were buried at sea or on foreign soil & whose remains did not make it home.
All the maps were very helpful & beautifully done. Each map is very large & made up of hundreds of very small pieces of glass. One map showed exactly where my uncle's ship would have been when it was bombed & where he was buried at sea.
There is a small chapel where people had left flowers for loved ones. If I ever come here again, I believe I would bring more flowers to leave in not just my uncle's, but all of the fallen men & women's honor. Maybe flowers for each war or each wall or maybe just some in the chapel for everyone. I believe it would be a very small token of appreciation showing we haven't forgotten what their deaths gave us. There is a quote there that says to take their deaths & give them their meaning. It was a time of quiet reflection/meditation to ask myself, are we doing that?
If you visit, please allow time to read all the quotes & look at all the maps & leave time for reflection/meditation & to soak it all in.
NOTE:
On your way out, after you drive through the gate, if you stop on the side of the road you can get an amazing panoramic view of Honolulu.

My family would like to visit in December. Where does one park? Are there any fees? Do visitors generally park and walk through the cemetery or drive through the grounds? Thanks.

There’s no fees and ample parking. You walk the memorials and grounds, to include an overlook with commanding views of Honolulu & Diamond Head. To absorb it all in takes a good couple of hours.
Hi; Are there guided tours & if so how much, how often ?
Are you able to hire motorised transport eg golf cart

Can one purchase Flowers to place at a grave site at the cemetery itself? If not, does anyone know if there are any flower stops close by? Regards
There are numerous flower shops that are right down the road in Chinatown that has beautiful flower arrangements. Safeway is also down the street at the corner of King and Pali. Nothing is sold on site.

I am so confused :( We are planning our trip to Hawaii and of course must include a visit to the Pearl Harbour Historic Sites but I cannot find a suggested self guided itenary anywhere of how to get around the following sites - USS Arizona, Battleship Missouri, Aviation Museum and Bowfin. I have a touch of OCD so cant just turn up and wing it I need to know start here .....move onto next place and so on. I understand that some sites need to be booked and we have purchased a Go Oahu Card to cover entrance fees (so no point in paying a tour guide for a formalised trip). Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Please I dont want to get home to Australia and be told we missed something :)

You will still need to get a ticket to go on the Arizona, I would suggest you get to the memorial early morning since there are a limited number of tickets available for the day of the tour. Most of the advanced tickets are taken by the tours. Once in the park, you can do the self guided tours of the Bowfin, Planes of the Pacific and the battleship Missouri. For the battleship you have a choice of a recorded tour, or can pay for a guided tour.
The Bowfin is in the park and you can walk to it. For the Missouri and Aviation Museum you will need to take a bus that boards behind the Bowfin Museum. There are several buses (motor coaches) doing continuous loops through both the Missouri and Aviation museums and returns back to the Bowfin.
May I also suggest doing a tour of Punchbowl and hiking Diamond Head? If you have a car, Saturday and Sunday there is a giant flea market at the Honolulu Stadium that will provide souvenirs from clothing to ukuleles.

I have been told taxis and buses are not allowed to stop inside Punchbowl. But rental cars are? Am I correct. Looking at the layout it does not seem there is a "parking lot" there but like most cemeteries, parking is allowed on the streets that traverse the property. Is that so? Are there any information sheets available at the entrance?

Tour buses don't stop there, but yes, rental cars can park there. I go whenever I am in Oahu because my husband is inurned there. The bus prohibition is to keep the atmosphere respectful. It is a beautiful peaceful place.

I see from the answer above (or below) that people are confused on where you're going.
If you are going to the "Punchbowl" cemetery that answer is FREE, no tours as it's a cemetery, no gate fees, and park where ever you can, it's a cemetery.
If you're going to Pearl Harbor, then the answer is;
Visitor center is FREE, and lots of parking. (This is where you had to start).
USS AZ memorial is FREE (limited free tickets, so get there early for them) There are tour packages out there the $$$ for the same tour. The only advantage, is that you can buy them on-line and you don't have to get there early)
Ford Island is an active military base, and the USS MO, Aviation museum, and a few other items are on it. So you CAN'T just drive on to it. There are shuttle buses that take you there from the Visitors Center. I believe the shuttle is FREE, but the USS MO and Aviation Museum has a fee.
