I have visited over 94 National Cemeteries or other veterans cemeteries as part of my Survivor's Guilt. I also serve on an honor guard in a National Cemetery. I dragged my wife through 7 veterans cemeteries in a recent trip through Tennessee and apologized to her. She corrected me by saying, "No, every young person needs to visit one of these!" I failed to do my research where I would have discovered that 1700 of the steamboat Sultana are buried here after the worst maritime disaster in American history. On the way home from Andersonville Prison and another, boilers exploded killing 1700 or more. Some would have died being so emaciated from the prison they could not swim. Also, "Colored Troops" as they were called then are buried there from the massacre of Fort Pillow. Possibly the bravest of all Civil War troops, black soldiers were warned they would be put to death if captured. That they were. Their fort was overrun by a greatly outnumbered force and the captured were murdered.

Well kept, orderly and a good place to visit and reminisce about life that is finalized in this place.

Buried the former husband of a friend. Staff was very helpful. Traffic is well ordered and access is convenient.

I officiated at the funeral and placement of cremains of the father of a friend, complete with full military honors. The staff of the cemetery was in attendance and they were exceptionally nice.

Well kept and manicured, the entire area is saturated with respect and replete with honor for the dead. A walk along the roads will allow the visitor to get in touch with their own mortality and will evoke an overwhelming sense of appreciation and awe for the sacrifice of those interred there.

The last resting place for vets, it is a solemn and sacred place. Walk circumspectly, speak lowly, act in humble observance of the last full measure of devotion of those civil war dead as well as later wars.

Very nice job to all those who work there. Your pride in your work shows.

We went there to find one of my wife's grandfathers, a Civil War veteran. There are so many graves here. Must be 10 or 20 thousand. So many of them are "Unknown Soldier" and it makes you stop, pause, and think about what they went through. It makes one very humble.

I'd never been to a national cemetery before so I decided to stop by. As I drove in, I was immediately struck by the sheer volume of nearly perfectly aligned military headstones. I checked with the office and there are nearly 40,000 interred there, 30,000 or so soldiers with the balance being their spouses. Those interred include many from the Civil War, many from the Sultana disaster on the Mississippi, and the second largest group of "unknowns". Very moving time for me. "...some gave all..."

I love visiting cemeteries. This was well worth the time. I didn't expect it to be much, but there are a lot of people buried there. It has a very peaceful feeling. Nice place to stop, wander around, and get lost in your thoughts of the price of American freedom.

A beautiful quiet change of pace if you've spent the night before on Bee street. Beautiful monuments, civil war history.

My grandfather is one of the 40,000 buried at the Memphis National Cemetery. While it's the final resting place for so many, it also have a bit of history on the grounds.
After entering the cemetery, a bronze tablet with the Gettysburg address and another tablet addressing why we had national cemeteries are near.
Many people don't know that the Memphis National Cemetery has interred the second largest number of unknown soldiers (when Union soldiers were being moved from Elmwood to the National, the names were written in chalk. However the night before moving the caskets, it rain and the names were lost to history). Soldiers who died in the Sultana are also buried here.
The grounds are well maintain and it holds a peace.
The part of town that the cemetery is ok. There were groundsworkers in the cemetery during my visit.
There are programs held during the year, just check the website.
There are several areas with location info to find a love one.
This is a nice setting to honor those who serve their country. It was also a great history lesson to my nephew also
