This is the most Perfect American Gothic home in the country and is Definitely worth a trip on a Sunday afternoon. The Volunteers are Very well trained and do a great job too. The old Carriage house is unattached but nice too. The pre tour Video is nice addition also. we came for the Xmas Open House 3 yr ago and it was amazing how the actors played out their roles as The Jones family etc. the Wedding gown on display is cool too. A Must See in Richland county...hidden gem! I brought my cousin from AZ another time and she was thrilled.

When you research Oak Hill ignore the couple of reviews of some B&B or restaurant that must have a similar name, because this is a wonderful museum that clearly does not sell oysters! We’ve been through numerous tours of 19th century homes, but this one is pleasantly unique in featuring furniture, clothing and other articles that belonged to the family that lived here from the 1860s to the 1960s. Although only open for a few hours on Sundays, it’s a must-see in Mansfield.

I went here on a weekend day trip for lunch. I got the fried oysters. they were very small and mostly breading. It came with a side, which was ok. Prices are a bit steep

Like them on your Facebook. The history is great and watching them restore little things as well as big is cool to watch. Definitely a hidden treasure that I hope can be there for a long time.

Despite living in Mansfield, I had never toured Oak Hill Cottage. I saw a Facebook invitation for this even on a Saturday afternoon and thought the cottage would be fun to visit while it is decorated for Christmas. I was not disappointed! The house is really cool and was really decked out in period correct ways. The last member of this family went into a nursing home in the mid-60's and she left EVERYTHING in the house there. The family had lived in the home for over 100 years and all the furniture, pictures, art, fixtures, china, toys, rugs... you name it, including Christmas decorations is original! You can normally tour the house Sundays but at Christmas they do this annual thing where all the old residents roam the house and offer interesting bits of information. I am sure these folks are volunteers, and it was quite nice. Many of them had great information and their own niche, fascinating. My son really became interested in the Egyptian themes and some of the glass work. I rather forced him to accompany me, but he enjoyed the hour and a half that we toured. I would encourage those with interest in history to not miss this little place. If you are in the Mansfield area, it is worth the time!

We visited the home during their Sunday open house which runs from two to five. We arrived promptly at two and surprisingly, there were several other people who arrived at the exact same time we did. Parking is on the street and since it's in a residential area we didn't have a problem finding a spot. Normally, I wouldn't rate a historic home below four stars as I can only imagine the time and effort it takes to restore and actively maintain one of these historic beauties, but the disorganized chaos that they called a tour warrants a less than stellar review.

The tour started off decent enough. The six of us that all arrived at the same time purchased tickets in the basement and then were ushered into a small room to watch a four minute video of the home's history. After that we were told to go back outside and walk around to the front of the home and begin the actual tour there. I found it odd that you pay in the basement and then they make you walk to the front instead of taking the stairs to the main part of the house. They later explained that the steps leading upstairs are too steep, so for safety reasons they cannot allow visitors to go up them. Tickets are five dollars a person and once you pay they give you a ticket stub. The man who took our money must of walked up those steep stairs because by the time the group made it to the front of the house, he was there to greet us at the front door where he and another woman proceeded to take our tickets. Literally ten minutes after giving us the ticket, he took the ticket back. Maybe they're used for counting visitors? Perhaps they could give a small paper brochure along with the tickets that has a brief history/picture of the home.

After taking our tickets, another long haired woman appeared beside the original man and an older short haired woman. There seemed to be confusion over who was going to give the tour. Turns out, they all give the tour just different parts of it. It is definitely odd because even in super large historic homes like Stan Hywet in Akron they only have one tour guide. So, the man gave us a tour of the parlor and then he turned us over to the older lady who gave us a tour of the library. Halfway through this tour, the long haired lady took over and led us through the bathroom, sitting area and kitchen. I found the bathroom to be very unique with its copper tub and faucet with one knob for rainwater so I asked if pictures were allowed. She seemed taken aback and said she had never been asked that before and didn't know the answer. She told me she would have to ask the man who took our tickets. She never did ask and she never answered me. It seems extremely odd that a tour guide wouldn't know if you can take pictures. Perhaps, she needs more training. Once she was done talking she sent us back to the older lady who took us upstairs. I liked this guide the best, she was the most friendly and took her time. Also, each of the guides seemed confused about who said what, as a couple of times they would point something out and say, "As I'm sure your last guide pointed out..." even when they hadn't.

Aside from the distraction of the disorganized tour, the home is very pretty. The furnishings are original, which can be extremely rare with historic homes as often things are sold or given to family members. I especially liked the chandeliers, as they each had a different symbol. The chapel window is beautiful and I can say I've never seen one like it. While it's not the most ornate historic home, the Gothic style architecture is very interesting to see and it has several unique features. Before sending us off, the older tour guide told us not to miss visiting the carriage house before we left which is located across the street. (Their website even lists that it is open during the Sunday tours.) So, after leaving the home we and another couple walked across the street to find the doors locked. Upon inquiring, the other couple was told that they were short staffed and couldn't open the carriage house. I was kind of dumbfounded as there were three people in the house and after our tour was done there was no one in the house or parked outside for another tour. Couldn't one of them have unlocked the doors and given a brief introduction?! It seemed so redundant to have three people giving one tour. Am I glad I visited? Yes, but I don't think I'd want to visit again. I left feeling slightly anxious and irritated at the whole experience.

This historic home is a must see for any kind of history lover, especially because the home and all of its original furnishings are there, in tact. Amazing to say the very least.

Tour, approximately forty-five minutes, of restored Gothic Revival house built in 1847. Small chapel area in home with gothic stain glass window. Victorian furniture mostly original from when Dr. Jones owned the property. Louis Bromfield refers to the house as "Shane's Castle" in his novel The Green Bay Tree. Nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
