We drove down 491 south, then right onto Indian service road rte 13. We were on a paved road and not a private road. You can see this from miles away. Impressive and worth seeing in person.

We drove to the vicinity of this then around back through a road called Indian Route 12. The navigation took us along this route due to us missing a turn. Though the paved road was rough it was worth getting other views of this.

A huge and impressive rock formation in New Mexico. Beautiful and peaceful. Being there gave me this peace sensation. It's a big area where you can walk around.

It was worth the trip for my husband and myself! We loved seeing it. We were on our way to the 4-corners area and felt it was worth the little detour! However, we DID heed the advice of other travelers to the area and did NOT take the dirt road up to get up closer to Shiprock. We noticed a suspicious vehicle and several men standing outside the vehicle just at the entry of the dirt road. We felt unsafe and chose the better route of NOT going there. As senior citizens we knew we probably would not be able to fend them off if they were indeed going to do us harm. We had a great view from the main highways.

This was my second visit to this Navajo sacred site; the winged bird. Formed millions of years ago, this volcanic rock is about 1500 feet high along ranked by tall walls or dikes.
Fortunately, the climbing of the rock is now discouraged.
The best way to honor & experience the energy, is to park just after the entrance and walk along the wall to the rock. The wall is seen as a dragon made up amazingly of small rocks forced to the surface during repeated eruptions. There is a strange distortion of time and space as you walk and the surrounding silence is magical.

An incredibly beautiful spot off the beaten path on Navajo Land. The formation is the remnant of an extinct volcano with 2 large dikes emanating from the main "magma chamber". The site is sacred to the Navajo people and should be treated with respect. You can drive along the dike up to the main formation from which you are a short walk to the base, no climbing is permitted. The "rock" can be spotted from miles around and is a dominant part of the horizon. We were able to view the outline from as far away Mesa Verde.

We drove from our campground close to the Mesa Verde Nation Park Entrance and went out 160 onto the Navajo Reservation. It took 70 miles to just be able to drive by to see it from the car! It looked like a giant castle from “Frozen “ the movie on a huge blanketed rock bed! We had no place to pull over for a photo op. We continued to the town of ShipRock. Stopped at McDonald’s for an ice tea and use the bathroom. Not much else to see! Rather disappointing , but on the way back we stopped for lunch at the Ute Mountain Casino. Loved it!

We drove all the way to the rock. It’s just a cool stop and see place on tribal land. The history of it is kind of neat but we knew the history first and wanted to go see it. Just a nice stop along the way place. It probably will take about 30 min - 1 hour to see depending on how far you drive in to it. Also we were glad we had a 4 wheel drive but either way take it slow.

First off, you can't get really close to this geological attraction, as it is a sacred place. Having been to Devils Tower, this place might seem redundant, as it is the same general type of geological oddity. You can drive some dirt roads and get within about four miles. Not sure you need to get that close anyway, especially if you have a good telephoto lens. Get as close as you need, take your pic, move on. Recommended

Hello, Rose H. I was planning a motorcycle trip to see Shiprock. I know you said it was on private land. To your knowledge, is it possible to have a guide take me to thee base of Shiprock? Do yo think it would be possible to camp there overnight?

All areas near the formation are closed to non-Natives for the traditional religious purposes and for the safety of the formation and lava dike. It is recommended that the public stay at least three miles (4.8 km) away from the formation and 20 feet (6.1 m) from the lava dikes or wall when visiting. Navajo religious rights (the Fundamental Laws of the Dine' (Dine' Natural Law) from the Navajo Nation Title 1 Laws), Navajo grazing rights, boundaries, and private properties lines apply around and in the formation. The formation is a Navajo religious site. The restrictions were put in place in July 2016 by the delegated tribal authority (i.e., Navajo families and grazing holders who live around the formation, Shiprock Pinnacle Tribal Advocates, and members of the Navajo Chapters & Tribal Council). Visitors without any proper tribal authorization will be considered to be trespassing on Federal Indian Reservation land and are subject to legal sanctions. The tribal police at the formation monitor its use and visits.

Is there any way to see Shiprock without get on a dirt road? We will be on a motorcycle and some people say its bumpy along with dirt. I am not sure about riding bike on this road. Can we see it from distance from closest paved road?

Yes you can. You need to go south on 491 from the town of Shiprock. At about mile marker 85 turn west on Route 13. It is NOT labeled. The areas around the formation are closed to the public, the formation is on private property, which is sacred to the Navajo. You can see the formation from Route 13 which is paved.

How many miles is the dirt road to the formation?

I would say 5-10 miles. It is about a 15 minute drive from entrance to base

How far is shiprock from tsod
HeyJerry2011
Saint Louis, Μιζούρι146 συνεισφορές
More information, please. TSOD not necessary if you keep your bearing,
Water, protein. Navajo Reservation
has minimal gas stations, no beer.
Always stop, refill and get water. Shiprock can go to GC north rim if temperature allows. Or, go NE to get to cooler elevations.

What would be the easiest way to get to Shiprock from the town of Shiprock. My wife and I want to go there this coming weekend. Thank you.

Drive south from the town of Shiprock on US 491 for a little more than four miles. Turn right on Indian Service Route 13 and there's a pull off place about 5.5 miles from 491. There's a dirt track there that will get you closer.
Not sure about legal or cultural issues but I do understand that Shiprock itself is a very meaningful place to the Navajo.
