Had a great, last minute hike at this park. Went the long way to the grist mill. Bit of a rainy day but the canopy helped a great deal. Definite recommendation.

Great cabin for the price and proximity to Calistoga. The kitchen was well enough equipped that we were able to cook all our meals without needing to bring anything other than our food. We did bring a few of the things that we prefer, like knives and a wine opener, but they have the basics.

This is a rustic, vintage cabin. Know that you are going for the experience of that and you'll be fine. Everything is small. The kitchen, the bathroom, the bed. All mini.

But you're staying in Napa Valley for less than $200 a night, and you can hear the owls at night, and you can smell the faint smell of someone's campfire or their bacon cooking next door. It's a woodsy experience, and you can drive down the road for fine wine, food, or spa treatments.

Cabins do not have a campfire area, but you can use a neighbor's pit or a day-use area campfire. The park staff told us we could use an empty campsite fire pit. Wood can be purchased on-site; cash only.

This is very close to Calistoga (10-15 minute drive). Small charge to drive into the park. We went for a daytime hike when it was very hot (low-mid 90's), but the Redwood trail is very well shaded and provided great relief. I did not a fair bit of poison oak along the side of the trail, so stay on the trail. There were a fair number of gnats that you are aware from them buzzing your ears. I suspect a little bug spray beforehand would have eliminated that problem. The Redwoods were really interesting to look at. Our total hike was 3.0 miles and I rate it as easy.

First time staying at this campground. Happy to report that the campsites are well spaced apart, ample in size, and sufficiently shaded.
We stayed midweek and I would say it was very quiet, and about 2/3 full.
No problem at all with wasps. I asked the Ranger about it and he said some years are worse than others.
We brought our bikes, intending to ride from our campsite to the Silverado Trail, but you are better off taking your car with your bikes to the trail as it is some distance and you'd have to bike along the busy highway up to Duneweal Rd.
Definitely bring a campstove as it isn't really feasible to cook in the fire pit.
Very conveniently located near several wineries, and also just a few miles outside of Calistoga- if you want to go into town.
All in all a great place to stay!

We have camped at the park many times, both tent camping and yurt camping. We prefer the yurt camping by far. The yurts are well equipped with a very comfortable bed, indoor picnic table and plenty of cots. Our favorite yurts are #22, #24 and #26. They have just recently opened up yurt #22 as dog friendly, but it was obvious to us by the white fir stuck to sides of yurt and behind the bed, former guests had snuck in their beloved pet. To us, as dog lovers and owners, this was not a big deal - just swept up with the broom provided. Temperatures for late August were very warm throughout the day but perfectly cool and lovely at night. Perfect sleeping weather with the wood sounds. The park was very quiet, with very few guests- which we actually loved! Hiking was nice with only a few others on the trail. Everyone masked as required when within social distance.

The convenient location made it possible to complete our 2-night stay-- we would have been miserable due to the yellowjackets and closed activities if we planned to only stay in the park.

There are traps at each campsite and we saw one sign acknowledging the problem, but the traps are insufficient (or at least not attractive enough while campers are cooking/eating). We cooked one quick meal (hot dogs), were driven into the tent to eat it, and after scrambling eggs was no better in the morning, decided not to cook in the park anymore. We heard yellowjackets buzzing around the tent starting at 6am and they went to bed by 8:45pm, even with a fire we hoped would smoke them out. The second night we had takeout and tried a picnic table in the day use area; this gave us a 5-minute head start but we still finished our meal in the car.

We did, however, see some happy campers with those full-sized screenhouses (I think they have a floor, though, so it does require you to bring your own table). I would not return to this campground without one, and I'm certain my review would be 4-5 stars if we had one, too.

The extensive poison oak was also difficult with a child to wrangle, but not the end of the world-- it was dusty enough that we hope none of the (many) leaves on the ground were potent. Definitely bring your tecnu (we forgot ours) and tread carefully-- even on trails where it's leaning into the walking path.

The good stuff:
- bathrooms were cleaned daily and in well-maintained condition
- potable water plentiful through many well-spaced taps
- park and camp staff were kind, patient and helpful
- they encourage recycling with bins available at each site

Wildlife:
- Saw a few squirrels but didn't notice issues with raccoons or other critters-- no critter-proof trash bins, either-- and it seemed safe to leave our food in the tent at night or while we were away.
- Lots of bats flying around at dusk-- they're probably why mosquitoes weren't an issue. I wish they ate yellowjackets, too!
- A few varieties of woodpeckers. Fun to watch in the morning. Blue jays, too.
- saw a bluebellied lizard, deer, and evidence of coyote (scat) on our hike in the park.

The rest of the park:

- We hiked from the campground to Coyote Peak, but to encourage social distancing certain trails are now, apparently, one-way. Unfortunately the signage was not great-- none if leaving from the campground's trailhead, and we ended up stuck at a dead end between two one-way trails pointing at each other (at the intersection of South Fork and Coyote Peak trails). So we could either hike an extra unknown # of miles down South Fork trail to make what appeared to be a much longer loop (not an option with a reluctant 10-year-old), or hike "backwards" for the Coyote Peak segment. Thankfully we only encountered two people on that segment (on a Wednesday around 9:45am), but I'd suggest checking with the ranger on their intended routes even if you know the area.

- The pool is only open during the weekends, which is really a bummer if you planned your trip (like we did) to avoid crowds due to covid-19. We ended up driving out to Lake Berryessa (~45 mins each way) which was *great*, but a lot of windy roads-- not for the easily carsick.

- Bale Grist Mill and Bothe-Napa SP Visitor Center sadly also closed until further notice (probably because they're indoors).

- Day Use Area has the small Pioneer Cemetery. I'm normally into cemeteries but this one left a bit to the imagination (all the signpost frames were empty, so we only saw one plaque marking the church location). Took us 7 minutes to saunter the entire loop.

Logistics:

- The reservecalifornia website showed all reservable sites booked for July and most of August, but there were ~7 sites held for in-person, same-day registration. A ranger we called a week earlier advised us to arrive by 9:30am to get the best chance at a site. They said if no one had stayed at a site the night before, we could go ahead and set up camp (otherwise we'd have to return after 2pm, after securing the reservation). But the person assigned to the kiosk at the front was out testing water until 10, and the self-registration sign at the kiosk suggests you can claim any unoccupied site. This is either not true, or only true after certain hours, or if you know which sites are unoccupied-- but you wouldn't know that without talking to a staffer. The host had a printout of reservations for that day only, but the kiosk has a computer to look up multiple days and can print the receipt you need to affix to your windshield. None of this was a big deal, but we wasted time attempting self-registration.

- the first-come, first-served campsites for people without reservations are literally walk-in. I thought that was a colloquialism or typo, but no-- your campsite will be 20-100 feet from your car (there's a parking lot with assigned spaces). Each site has its own tradeoffs between distance to the parking lot/other campsites/the trash bins/bathrooms, and variable in square footage and dominant foliage. We stayed in 29 at the top of a small hill. The tent area was just barely big enough for our 8x10' tent and 2 camp chairs. Site 30 was "closed for covid" and we hope that was just because of how close it was to sites 29 and 28... but we didn't ask.

- I believe the walk-in sites are the quietest & most private at camp because they're a bit further removed (every time we hiked over to the bathroom it was quite loud in the area). Or it could just be that the first night we were the only occupant of the walk-in sites.

- the camp host sells firewood at $10/bundle. Their bundles are about 6-8 modest pieces and gave us 1 night of fire. You should buy wood locally but I don't think you have to buy from the campsite.

This was our third campground stop. The campsite was clean and the tent pad level and large enough for our 10x10 tent. The camp hosts have firewood for sale at the going rate. The restrooms and showers were clean. Showers were not expensive but you need quarters. Although the host had quarters, I would bring some with you just in case... the trees provide adequate shade so we didn’t need our pop-up. There were deer in the area around our tent one night.

It’s also within short distance to many great wineries and other haunts. We suggest the Oxbow Cheese and Wine Merchant in Napa and Wooden Valley Winery in Fairfield. Both got 5s from us.

As for this campground, I’d go back if I was camping in the area.

We’ve been camping at this lovely place for years and have loved it. This year, we decided to skip the hassle of a tent and went with a yurt. This is the first time we’ve been disappointed, though it really is no fault of the park. We ended up leaving a day earlier because of the following issues, so here is some info that might be helpful to others to plan for a visit:

Mattress: definitely bring some sort of thick Tempurpedic mattress topper if you are easily uncomfortable sleeping on pretty hard surfaces.

Wasps: in all of our years camping here, we never had a problem in the lower tent sites. The swarming was so bad that we went into town to get a few wasp catchers and made another one DIY. Even with all of this, we could not cook or eat outside of the yurt without getting absolutely bombarded by them. Other campers in the area of this yurt also experienced issues with them. We ended up going out to eat for every meal, which was awesome, but the food we brought was pretty much useless.

Hope this helps people prepare!

I so enjoyed this park that is not easily visible from Highway 29. If you are looking for hiking for half a day or an entire afternoon, you can't beat the location. There are over 10 miles of hiking trails nestled among the redwoods, maples, oaks, and madrone. I chose the redwoods hiking trail; it contained pristine creeks. You do have to be mindful of the terrain as there is poison oak. I hope to visit again in the near future. It was well worth the visit.

If you want excellent 1/2 day to full day hikes that are from to moderate then this is your place. Fantastic views of redwoods and the surrounding area from coyote peak.
