We were there on a Friday so it was not open. It was a nice looking mill. Well maintained and several information panels including one about the Aldie cavalry fight. Aldie is a beautiful town.

The Mill and surrounding buildings are historical, recently restored and beautifully maintained. The dual mill wheels are unique to this area and can be seen in operation but only at certain times when an 'open' sign is placed in front of the building. Otherwise, stroll around the buildings and take-in the peaceful area. Picnic tables and short walking trails are available.

I took a friend to visit this place to show some of the historic site of "Virginia". Great place to learn how the mill works (from reading) and the relationship of the U.S. Civil War. Going to Middleburg, spent a few minutes here to learn about old industry and Civil War. My two friends were very impressed.

We always stop by when the sign is out that says "grinding today" because there's an expert there to tell you all about the mill, the history and the area. You always learn something new! Having been to the gristmill near Mount Vernon, this one has less crowded tours which allows time for questions and makes the experience more interesting. The little park around the mill and the surrounding area is beautiful as well.

We drive by this mill often and have never stopped. Today, a beautiful fall day, we finally did. They were grinding corn today. The mill is original, for the most part. The guide was very informative - explaining how it worked and demonstrated it as well. He gave us the entire history of not only the mill, but the entire area. We learned a lot today! Don't miss this gem!

A visit to this historic masterpiece has been on our to-do list ever since we learned, in 2010, that the waterwheels had been restored and demonstration grinding would be presented on weekends. We finally made it to the mill last week.

Living at the time right on US Route 15, just a dozen or so miles south of Aldie, Ben’s family bought dairy feed for their 100+ head herd, and horse and mule feed for their saddle horses from this establishment, and Ben trucked barley and sorghum to the smaller county mill adjacent to the merchant mill for grinding into meal for hog slop.

To see the mill restored to operation and to attend the demonstration of grinding shelled corn into corn meal was a very special treat. The miller does a splendid job of explaining the intricacies of adjusting the millstones and speed of the wheels for optimum results.

It is intriguing to realize, while watching the ground meal drop into a waiting sack, that the exact same process was utilized back in 1809, when Abe Lincoln was born.

A very enjoyable day trip for residents of the Washington DC area or visitors thereto can be had by driving out River Road, crossing the Potomac River on White’s Ferry, catching the mill demonstration (Sat &Sun noon ‘til 5), then taking US 15 and Virginia 234 to Manassas and visiting the Bull Run battlefield. Do note that the park is open only from mid-April to mid-November.

Kudos to the Loudoun Preservation Society, Northern Virginia Regional Parks Authority and Virginia Outdoor Preservation folks. You have done your countrymen a memorable favor.

Had lots family visiting and needed a half day excursion. The Aldie Mill certainly filled the bill. While waiting for our tour to begin, we played corn hole (we brought it) in the grassy yard behind the mill. Once the tour started the fellow there explained the history of the mill and how it operated. What was really fascinating was to see it was actually a fully operational water powered grain mill and the mill operator ground some corn into corn meal.

How totally awesomely cool is it to see corn ground to meal through the workings of a water wheel? You get just that, and a lot more, at the Aldie Mill.

The entire operations is exceptionally well preserved, and the mill is in full working order, right down to running the internal grain elevators. The staff is highly knowledgeable and very outgoing; they even stayed over a little later as we showed up right before closing time. They explained everything in full details, and were happy to take all of my super-nerd questions about the workings of the mill.

There's even a resident snake, and apparently a few snake-babies, that come out to sun themselves on the millrace rocks, although we didn't get to see them on our visit.

Parking is ample, and even a little shaded. There is no cost for admission, but they are happy to receive a donation to help keep this outstanding attraction preserved and open.

We spotted this attraction from the side of the road and decided to stop. It was really cool to walk around the old mill buildings. It would have been even cooler if we were able to see what it looked liked inside. It is a very quick stop to make as there isn't much to see after you walk through around the barrier.

This place is about 1 hour from DC and free of charge. Originally we intended to go on a drive to a park and take a hike, bringing our dog and a football and figured we'd walk past a historical Mill building, which would be a cute bonus. Our children groan when we say we are going on a day trip and the worst offender in their book is to- Historic Places - "Nooo not that!" Whine, Whine. But they lose the battle because we have the car keys.
Today we didn't actually mean to subject them.
Turns out at the Aldie Mill there only a short path and bridge over a little stream (we came to find out is what Little River Turnpike is named after, because we were at the far, far end of that very road, known to all who live around the beltway, and it was named by the Mill owner forever ago). There is only a small area where we were able to walk the dog and play ball, but we weren't disappointed because the Mill itself was a little, hidden gem. By little I mean one, not very big, 4-story building. It was a nice cool day so we left our dog in the car outside for a nap and ventured in for a look. Greeted by tour guides, my 8 and 15 year-old looked at me like the 'play football in a park plan' was a disguise for -oh no- a historic place tour. I'm innocent, for real this time!
But the best part is, you can learn everything you would want to know and see in a half hour or less. If you kids are little, maybe age 10 or less, best to breeze through the "history" of the place, even though its 200 year's would interest you. But you are used to sacrifices any time you leave the house with your kids right?
Moving on to the neat stuff, kids who like gears and machinery especially should appreciate the real-live demonstration of grinding corn at the mill.
My kids are dubious when challenged and so when the guide said they could not, on their own, crush the kernels of corn he handed them- boy did they try! There was a lot of stomping going on. While telling us (actually) interesting facts about the machinery, the guide proceeded to start the water mill churning, which started other things whirling and shaking and there went the corn kernels, down to a floor below to be crushed by giant stone circles. The kids hurried over to see the crushed grain in little metal cups emerging from below, moving up a super old fashioned conveyor belt, then disappearing above their heads. They then ran over to see the crushed product spewing out a chute, producing piles of various textures that we got to feel. We were informed that for animal feed, the corn gets about half-crushed, and flour for cooking comes out very soft and fine. I was puzzled by an in-between version in a pile before us. "It's grits" said the guide. Oh, of course, breakfast of, just about everyone for at least a hundred and fifty years, more? way more? I'm pretty sure you can still buy grits at the store if you can peel your eyes away from stacks of fluorescent cereal in the very same row. In fact, the Aldie Mill still sells previously-exhibited crushed grain for animal feed. No waste there! Environmental lesson bonus.
Down a flight of stairs and there was a gigantic metal wheel with notches turning a smaller wheel (sublimenal engineering or physics lesson?) which had made all of the above happen before our eyes. Well not entirely, we ended by going outside and were shown the water wheel of the Mill - the actual start of the stuff we had seen. Water. Water made all that happen. Not electricity. All said and done in less than a half hour, with sounds and movements and the stomping of corn kernels.
FYI-There is an antiques store right next door and restaurants we did't have time to explore.
My kids had been quiet listeners when they were supposed to be and enthusiastic participates the rest of the time. Maybe it was just a good day for them, or maybe historic day trips can wind up being just the perfect really-short-length-of-time and big-moving-parts combo. The last thing my youngest said before bed was, incredulously, "did you know Dad still has an indestructible corn in his pocket"? Pretty cool thing for a modern kid to think about.
